The wife and I are looking for a modern home that's in very reasonable range.
I'd like to be within driving distance to NYC in a pinch but other than that we're not picky where we live.
cost of living
proximity to nature
decent people with diverse interests
but mainly we want a modern home and hopefully a little land.
Pleas make suggestions because we are lost!
Thanks,
Adam

Hmmm
By range, do you mean price? I think it's going to be a difficult search in the greater NYC area.

I did Woody,
A long drive is fine, but needing to get on a plane makes it hard. Things come up in a moments notice and I need to be there but I can drive for hours.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Adam
I live in NYC and have been contemplating purchasing a place outside of the city close enough to allow for a commute in for work. Todd has some nice homes from time to time. Check out his site.

Modern Home
Try Tobyhanna Pa, Jim Thorpe Pa, convenient to interstate 78 and 80 which takes you right to NYC. These are 1hr 45 minutes to 2hrs away. Prices are reasonable! And you are right in the middle of all the nature you want.

PA
I am only familiar with eastern PA, and there isn't much in the way of modern architecture in areas where land/property is inexpensive. I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for, but one option could be purchasing a building and renovating it for residential use. In that case, there are numerous towns where you could look.

Not sure
what a reasonable price is for you. Prices are very reasonable right now. And seems so much is available. I'm just north of the city, 20 miles, after 25yrs in the social mix of Brooklyn. Nice change to be in the forest.
Not much new modern as the land and building costs are so high but the early 60's are very abundant as the original owners are now moving to assisted living and other downsizing options.
Eichlers attempt failed and only two were built in my area. Might have been a good sprawl but his style was more tract housing.
Our builder, who came from a family of woodworkers in Norway, and studied Architecture there, created homes tucked into the forest on one acre lots but sited at angles from each other for full privacy. Clear redwood siding and un-disturbed landscaping keeps these homes hidden and very much like tree houses.
Anything within an easy commute does have a higher cost but so worth it for us.
Linking one that has been mucked a bit but still has a good soul. Very well built.
I do have a friend from Cali that wants to move back east and has found some 'fixer-upers' in the Nyack area under 200. Also an easy commute.

Love the house but outside of what we can afford. We have been thinking of upstate but the taxes are too much for us. We've decided to really move away but like I said earlier I need to on a moments notice be in the city but that being said it's not that often and I'd rather drive hours and hours as long as I'm driving back to something nice. We're lost though and any nudge in the right direction would be so appreciated.

hi Adam
All I could think of was Pam Kueber at Retro Renovation or her community might know. Hope it turns out well for you.

Hmmm
Active MLS ID does not register for that house.

2 cents
I used to live outside of Philly and worked with quite a few people who made the commute into NYC. The trains are terrific. There are some pretty wonderful neighborhoods, but they can get pricey.

Have you thought about Rhode Island?
Not sure if it meets your other criteria, and modern homes are definitely not the norm, but Providence (actually all of Rhode Island) is only three hours from NYC by train or car. I've lived here nearly ten years, and nature activities (hiking, boating, beaches) especially in the southern part of the state, are amazing. I'm currently dreaming about the home listed below, which is totally out of my price range. With just a bit of effort, I think it would be amazing. Good luck with your search!
