I am not enough of an audiophile to know myself, but is the concept behind it something that any other manufacturer is experimenting with? That is, a wireless speaker with its own built-in amplification, that receives its input signal via wifi, from the music library on your desktop or laptop computer.

Yes, there are lots of those systems, and they've been around for years. For just one example, take a look at Logitech's Squeezebox Radio (which they're renaming/refocusing as the UE Smart Radio) and their UE Wireless Speakers:

If it has equal or better sound quality to a wired system I like it very much, the circular design makes a kind of sense...reminds me of this painting of the sound of foghorns. Though you'd need a decent sized pad for them no? Perhaps a swivelling wall mounted bracket would work.
The only thing that concerns me is the legs, they seem a bit obvious, done for historical reference or fashion or marketing purposes only, something in stainless like the Imac stand would look better in my opinion.
Pretty much anything from B&O is overpriced.
But that's sort of the point with most any luxury brand, is it not?
Some of their phono cartridges back in the day were competitively priced for their performance vs. weight, though, IMO.
Heath: Some of Dove's paintings areon my list of all-time faves. I remember the first time I laid eyes on "That Red One" in person. I nearly fell down.

It's built with the sort of components you'd expect to see in an OEM car stereo -- Class D amps, one 3/4" tweeter per channel, one 3" midrange per channel, and a single shared 8" woofer -- so you can't expect great sound quality. Plus, the left and right drivers are separated by less than two feet, so no real stereo imaging.
But yes, it's wall-mountable.

Yup, much as I like lathe work and tapered cones its just hackneyed here.
They may be overpriced but its worth considering that if that back is injection moulded then the high cost of making the moulds has to be recouped, from a lower volume production than the average $20.00 plastic garden chair.
Edited cos fastfwd types faster than me, thanks for the technical info, I'd have to pass, I still like the disc form and the sharp edge though.
B&O figured out how to deal with that problem long ago.
When they eventually take the speaker out of production, they can recoup some of the cost by selling their molds to another manufacturer.
