have solved this problem long time ago with a closing mechanism that can only be opened by putting in the carafe...as Henri Dreyfuss used to say (or could have said): "design starts with gathering all competitive products, analyzing them and see where you can improuve enough to make the purchase worthwhile for the consumer...."

I prefer how quickly the coffee is brewed in a Bunn and with the right filters and Peet's French Roast, there is indiscernible loss in taste. It also quickly produces 200 degree water that can be pored into a sauce pan and brought to a 212 degree boil in just a few seconds. AND it obsoletes my Hobbs tea kettle--no reason to bring water for tea to a boil. 200 degrees does just fine for my Barry's Gold from Ireland. If only Bunn would solve the problem with a manual switch.
