Hi - we are new to selling and buying great pieces of great mid century furniture, art, ornaments etc. When I have a customer ask where I have got my items from what should I say? It sounds cliched to say from auction!
Sorry for such a mundane question.
Thanks
Andrea

How about just telling them the truth?
I won't buy from liars or patronizers.

Yes, really ...
... I think that depends on the "provenience" of the customers, please don't misunderstand me, but I'm offering only perfectly restored high-end items and my customers are exclusively interested in quality and confidentiality, so they never will put that question to me.

It has to do with honesty.
If you'd rather not say, say, "I'd rather not say."
Don't blow smoke up my ass.

What is
"provenience" ? Is that like a provenance that's provided as a convenience, maybe ?
Another version recently encountered was "providence." I guess that would be a good thing, too . . .

Well
I have been in the high end art business for years and people will always ask, it has nothing to do with the quality you're offering. By the way, its provenance, and provenance is different to how you came about it. It has to do with the history of the piece itself not how anyone builds his collection

Yes people do ask!
I agree people like to know where pieces come from - If I say auction, fairs or house clearances, they seem to think that its something they could do and get a bargain cutting out me the seller - but as I said to a recent customer you need to know what to look for!
Its not a case of lying - its just about knowing a professional answer to give my customers without it sounding like its something trivial and easy that anyone could do.

This is what I tell people:
...
This is what I tell people:
The store began as nothing but water and darkness, and all the furniture was in Mid Century Modern Land, above the stone vault that makes up the sky. Eventually Mid Century Modern Land became so crowded that the furniture needed more room, and wanted to move down to earth. Not knowing what was below the water, they sent down a side table to explore. Side table dove below the water and eventually came back with some mud from below. That mud grew and grew, and finally it became the island that I call my store. Eventually my store was dry and the furniture moved down. There still was no light, however, and so the furniture installed lighting. The furniture multiplied rapidly.

Nice ...
... but what's your reply if the customer is answering:
You should have become storyteller, because the entertainment value of your stories is better than the conditon of your furnitures. 🙂
