And. . .
any other red furniture had better be the EXACT same red -- in my opinion. Of course, there are many reds and other "hot" shades that could be mixed -- I fondly recall some earlier mixtures that included red and hot pink -- but just two red upholstered pieces that were not the same red would look inexcusably amateurish. . .to me.
It's time for some better uses of the flat-screen mode -- sliding or roll-down screens etc -- to make it "go away" when not in use. I've just drawn a smalish screen over a low fireplace, where the TV is set into the wall and a miniature Japanese six-panel screen folds closed over it when "the theatre is dark". . .

I really like...
and have always liked the idea of red and green together... I can "see" the red sofa and a glass green color for all the walls with black and white print pillows (Alexander Girard) on the sofa... Throw in a black fabric or leather lounge chair (Eames, Womb or Bird) and... Viola!... As far as the BIG TV... Run a continuous "fireplace" DVD and there you have it... Martini's anyone?

the red/green bit is like my living room. I have one red wall with a dark green sofa in front of it and a matchng green shag rug. Sounds loud, but the greens are really earthy and muted. Other than that everything else is white and natural wood tones.

Soneone gave us..
a "fireplace" video... With sound it even crackles and pops!... Really funny! Actually have not seen a DVD version but it must exist... A 62" fireplace would be pretty spectacular... As far as the wall color goes don't be afraid to experiment... Paint is cheap! In our MCM house we had lots of "Mondrianish" architectural inluences so when we bought about 5 years ago I got the idea there should be primary colors involved... I painted the largest wall in the livingroom ultrmarine blue, the painted block surrounding the fireplace bright yellow and the raised drywall panel over the fireplace bright red... The living, dining and kitchen areas are open plan with minimal divisions... All other walls except the ones mentioned are white... The kitchen cabinets are black with stainless steel appliances and salt and pepper granite counter tops... Anyway, after living with the saturated Mondrain colors for 5 years we decided to change the scheme of things and painted the blue wall a medium warm gray... The yellow fireplace block went to a charcoal color and the red panel over the fireplace stayed... I like the change, for change sake, but am missing the deep, saturated ultramarine wall... Am now thinking that large wall might need to be a soft glass green color hence bringing the red/green thing into play... My point is and has always been... Don't be afraid of wall color... For a minimal amount of cashola it can change...

Red/Green thing
Interesting to read how many modernist types are into this combination. I have it in my home too. Traditional style designers say "Red and Green should never be seen", but I think that they're hating the Xmas combination of crimson red and kelly green. Don't go there! My feeling about sick-huge TV's aside, Xmas colors are even more horrifying.
My combo is a deep brick-red with a bright citron green. Whitespike has a brighter red and a duller green. That's the kind of combo that works. One stronger and sone softer. So since you've got strong red and a big black thing, maybe a silvery pale green (celadon) or a greyish yellow green (green tea) would work. The TV is going to affect everything and anything you put in that room so test the colors against both the red sofa and the black hole.

I personally don't think so..
The "glass green" is cool, calming and almost neutral... Then you have the warm red there to spice things up... I hate to use the inference but it's a bit "Zen-like"... And then, when the "holidays" come you'll be "in vogue" with the basics "preset"... There are lots of color solutions and what will be good for you is very personal... Your room's space, light, volume and your "mental state" all play a part.. For sure, you should have fun and not be too serious about you decisions... Life's too short... Be joyful...

Yes, color is very personal
but I didn't get the feeling that patpoitup's red was a particularly warm red. The comment was 'lipstick' red, which is generally very true red or a more bluish red. Glass green is turquoise-y, which would be a hard combination to enjoy, I think. As you said color is personal, but there are some general rules that make success more likely, such as balancing warm to cool, saturated to flattened that sort ot thing. I may think Xmas colors are wretched, but many other combos or red/green are gorgeous to my mind.

perhaps lipstick red was wrong for me to use, the red is pretty vibrant. I'm VERY new to design...I have had no training or classes, I just really enjoy it.

ceiling fans
I also need a ceiling fan for that room. I have been looking at home depot and they have some pretty amazing fans, I need to keep it $200 and under. I saw this fan that had two blades going counter CW, and two blades going CW, it was very intriguing. Like I said, I am very new to this, do you guys usually consider fans in your design of the room?
