Hi I have a keen interest in modernist furniture from the 50's, 60's and 70's. I am starting to collect a few pieces and have some nice furniture and lights so far.
After recently purchasing a sideboard I asked where the buyer got his items from. His reply was auctions. Not Bonhams or Christie but normal auction house.
So I wanted to know if anyone could advise on the best Auction houses in the UK to find items from? I ask as I do not want to pay shop prices, which I can not afford. I want to buy items to use and enjoy in my home as intended.

Thank you for any help or advise,

Jamie.

I am afraid in this day and age of modern technology, even the smallest auction house publicises their auctions allover the net, good for the seller, not so for the buyer. I went to one recently trying to buy a number of items with totally unrealistic estimates only to find they were selling at over retail price - and this isn't a rare situation now either! Best bet is to search online but don't expect a bargain every time.

Nick - Thank you for responding. I am keeping and eye on auctions near to me, I live in greater London. Perhaps I should just bite the bullet and buy the best from a trader. Just means I'll have to save harder!

No problem! That isn't to say there won't be the odd good deal at auction, likewise from a dealer. Good luck in your search 🙂

At the moment dealers will probably take good offers as you say. I just bought a 2nd Robert Heritage designed sideboard for less then half what I paid for my first. Mind you the first had been french polished in a satin finish and the 2nd is unrestored. I have had a thing for these sideboards since child hood. My Grandparents had the entire dinning room set. It wasn't until recently that I realised where this desire had come from. Whilst at my Grandparents we where looking through old photos and what do I see in their old dinning room but the Robert Heritage Hamilton set by Archie Shine!
Really glad to have found this site. I am not a designer by trade but have a real appreciation and passion for it. If only this had of been realised by the careers officer at school! What a bunch of mumpties that lo are.
