Cord and tarp
Consider using 550 cord. Outdoor fabric makes a nice replacement canvas.

Canvas
My canvas was sturdy, but extremely faded by the sun. I purchased canvas paint and now it looks brand new! If your canvas is sturdy, I highly recommend this route!

Cord strength
I went to three different specialized stores after searching the Internet. My cords were all frayed. I ended up purchasing a cotton covered polypropylene non stretch cloths line and dyed it the color I needed. It was a perfect match to the original and so cost effective since the material was marketed as a clothesline! I got mine at a crafts store, but you can find these at Walmart.
