This thread is for pictures, links and interesting stories about prototypes and variations of modern funiture classics.
I've always loved prototypes myself so let me start with this link where you'll find a two seater DCM chair by C. & R. Eames:

... and I guess by now everybody has seen the forgotten member of Bertoia's line of furniture for Knoll? This asymmetric chaise was sold at Wright20 some time ago. I recently saw that Knoll is putting it into production again.
Eames two seater...
What an interesting idea for some designer to run with. Not the eames idea which is pretty stupid, but rather wouldn't a coffee house, internet cafe or even a pick-up bar with three dimensional seating be fascinating. create a whole bunch of two seaters, or better yet three seaters that allow persons to carry on conversations and flirt with persons not only in the horizontal plane, but above and below them also. it would be an instant sensation, or a complete bust with 20-35 year olds...not sure which...but what fun to try.
This concept would freak municipal occupancy code regulators...
One could get, possibly, triple the people into a given space based on overall square footage... A possible three tiers of coffee drinkers per normal floor... Alert Starbucks immediately!... If it's not legal now they'll make it so! Heavy petting allowed on tier number three (or will it be known as third base?)... As long as you buy a double latte low foam half caf with Splenda... Splendid!
An early version of Marcel...
An early version of Marcel Breur's Wassily Chair was a folding version, and the leather straps were originally made of a metal wire mesh.
These folding versions have only recently been reproduced:

Hah !
Folding Wassily -- how fresh. . .
Well, DC, I couldn't help taking that interesting idea up, for a minute. Wonder where it might go to, eventually ? 3D space is where it's at, architecturally. . .
I do hope more "wierd and wonderful" furniture prototypes will be presented and discussed, here. . .great topic.
