Does anyone know where I can purchase the Hans Wegner 501 Chair. This is the chair referred to as "The Chair," used in the first televised presidential debate between Kennedey and Nixon. I am trying to track down a pair in the walnut finish for a client, and this is proving to be surprisingly difficult. Thanks.

We have a pair
We have a pair in teak with leather seats in our showroom. I've never see them in walnut. It is my understanding that they were only produced in teak. They were offered with either a leather or woven cane seat.

My
reference says that oak (oiled) and teak (waxed) were the two species employed.
It also says that the caned seat would sometimes sag in American usage so a leather seat was offered as a choice. Wegner is said to have remarked that if a customer used his head he would buy the leather version but that if he listened to his heart he would take his chances with the cane.

Oak?
You may well be right, but the Oda book "Danish Chairs" only lists Teak. Are they curretly offered in oak, or have they always been? I've never seen a vintage example in oak.
And regarding the seat... what?! Are you suggesting that Americans are fat?! Or is it just me that needs to go on a diet? Guess I should stick with the leather seat.

Yes, oak....
and yes, you can find vintage original Johannes Hansen produced chairs in oak, but they not very common. The Oda book is a nice quick reference, but far from comprehensive.
It's a bit of a different look. Personally I prefer teak, but they are still beautiful in oak nonetheless.
