I am considering buying two vintage Wassily chairs at a rather stiff price (more than $2000), which I guess would be ok if they are licenced chairs, but rather overpriced if they are knock offs... I have been reading up at the Wassily chairs both on this forum and elsewhere, but I am still rather confused as regards these chairs. As can be seen from the photos, the end tubes are velded (and nicely done too), apart from the two underneath the chair - they are open. The leather is really thick and have a nice patina. The curves of the armrests seem to be a bit rounder than the more modern versions of the chair. The crome has lost its shine apart from under the leather. There are no identification of the producer - no stickers nor stamps. I really like these chairs, and would have bought them without blinking if they had been cheaper, but at this price I would like to know whether or not they are knock offs before I decide. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance.

I'd guess that the pair are not a Knoll product due to the chairs having the wrong hex shaped attachment bolts.  Better pictures would confirm this.
Best,

Yes, I was expecting that. They appear to be very old - and for an untrained eye - older than 50 years. Could they be produced by Gavina or even Thonet (although I am not sure if they ever put on leather slings)?

Greets.

I not too familiar with Gavina and /or Thonet, but the Knoll attachment bolts shouldn't be chrome plated.  But I'm usually wrong.

Best,

I had posted this before in previous threads, the only way to tell the real deal (currently by Knoll) from the look alikes is the exposed end of the tubes, if they are caps, they are knockoffs (even the ones from Italy).  the legit ones (regardless of who made them) have polished welded ends.  That's also true with other Breuer pieces like the Cesca chairs.

Hi Ruka! Are you still searching for an authentic pair? Mine were purchased in 1973 by my parents, excellent condition. 🙂 (Hope am not infringing the rules by saying so!)
