Morning, We have two Platner easy chairs and ottoman from 1970. They are in great condition but as with most old latex some of it is firm is some places. The cushions are good and so is the ottoman cushion and this issue of dry latex is really only on the top and edges of the chair. We are satisfied with them as is but we know in a couple of years we may want to look at making them soft in those areas.does anyone have suggestions on who or how to re-do the cushioning in these? The fabric is lovely so we do not want to change that element.Any advice appreciated.

maybe someone has a suggestion for cleaning the fabric when replacing foam. i tried this once on a sofa. thought i was being careful washed in cold water with woolite, line dryed outside. fabric still shrank too much to reuse. resist the urge to wash unless someone has a better idea.

I am not greatly familiar with the upholstery of these chairs, but can you get to the foam without opening a seam?  And is it really  latex foam, or "common" polyurethane foam?

What is inside it is a good question. I assumed it was latex because of how it feels on the outside, but I really do not know. I could not see a way of easily taking it off either. There is always a way to do it, and if it was a real issue I would jump head first into it, though was kind of wondering what I would be looking at years down the road. If I am not mistaken (and I would like someone who knows to weigh in here) that underneath there is a fiberglass frame to the seat upon which the foam/latex adheres to. If this were so, then it would make cushioning easier - assuming there is a way to remove the stiching.
The good news I guess being other than it doesn't really need the attention at the moment, is that due to the size of the chair, if it were redone inside, it will be a lot of more linear plains than other chairs and probably be a lot easier. There are no tight curves in the design, it is quite graduated so laying foam inside would be "easier"...I guess.

If the foam is turning hard and crunchy in places, it's latex.  Urethane foam doesn't get hard and crunchy, it just loses its spring.
I wouldn't tackle replacing this foam if you're a DIYer or even if you have some limited upholstery experience.  Send them to someone who knows what they're doing.

I couldn't agree more.
I am reminded of a Hans Wegner Ottoman 2 years back I "thought I could handle".
I haven't sworn so much since my right ear was bitten off. (yes, my right ear was bitten off in a bar fight).
