I need a reading lamp for a lounge chair in my bedroom-- I've no extra space for a floor lamp, so I'm in the market for one that mounts to the wall.

I've always loved the Christian Dell scissor lamp, and it'd be a practical choice. Unfortunately, I'd like to spend around $100, and vintage Kaiser Idell lamps seem to fetch around $300-400 on Ebay.

Anyone know of cheaper alternatives, of this type?

That Dell is a nice one!
I have also seen that style lamp in teak at around $50.00.

The Tolomeo sells for around $250--
a smidge less than the Kaiser-Idell scissor lamp.
Maybe I'm delusional to think I can find a decent alternative for a measly $100.

I'd save up for the Dell - it's a near permanent fixture after all and 'sceond best' will just bug you after a while + with patience you may get one on German ebay for 100 -150 euro

I think you're right--
the additional $200 will be a vague memory, in a year from now; a beautiful, perfect lamp is forever (relatively speaking...).

Try good old IKEA
Lighting is one of the things they do really well. You might also check Forecast Lighting company. I've had great luck finding modernist-styled stuff from them.

If you can be patient?
I purchased a vintage metal scissor wall mounted lamp made by Lightolier with a glass diffuser a while back. The shade on my lamp is derived from a cone rather than a sphere like the lamp by Dell. I feel it resembles a collaboration of Bauhaus meets Jacobsen or Panton maybe.
I mention this only to suggest that unless you Love the Dell lamp - there are innumerable variations on the idea with a more modest price point, if you have the option of time.

Um, speaking of IKEA.... a few days ago I needed a wall-mounted light for a friend, she wanted something modern, so I picked out this unobtrusive LED model from Ikea (which can be directed exactly where you need it to go, and is pretty bright for LED):
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10128748
That said, I had also thought of hacking together two IKEA products to make a scissor lamp, similar to the Dell pictured, after getting the idea from my shaving mirror...
That would be this bathroom mirror (available in white or steel):
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/38006200
...and this work lamp (grey, but could be painted white):
http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/20370383
The trick is to remove the head off the lamp, and stick it on the end of the scissor assembly (the mirror is easily removable), in a graceful way. Might take a bit of thought, but I think its doable. Won't have the cachet of the Kaiser Dell, but it'd be the functional equivalent for about $25.

Agreed, Paulanna--
Everything about the Dell is a joy to behold-- from the enameled key-shaped switch... to the way the cord snakes through the scissor device... to the enamel finish... to the "ORIGINAL KAISER IDELL" logo. It's perfection.
