I've seen vintage Saarinen Knoll tulip tables in finishes they don't make any more. A sort of clay colored base coating and a dark oak top. Anyone know when they stopped making these options? What about when did they start using the polyester coating on the wood table tops?

Answer from Knoll
When Knoll made the bases in the U.S. in 1986 (and older) they were cast
iron. We did offer three finishes - white, black and putty (beige).
Europe always made the bases in aluminum. When we discontinued
manufacturing that line in U.S. and moved all production to Europe in 1986.
That is when they became aluminum and Europe only offered white and black.
In the U.S. we did offer wood tops but in Europe they only offered in
laminate and marble. So when we did that switch, 1986, that's when the
wood got discontinued.
However...we did bring back wood tops two years ago.
