Hi,

Recently posted my Saarinen copy side table to my local CL. Responce indicates I may have a collectible on my hands. Can some one help my determine it's value? I'm having seconds thoughts about selling it becasue it provides a connection to my parents. I'm trying to post photos to the blog but it won't take my Snag-it.

Below is the ad text with the details:

Eero Saarinen's Pedestal collection Oval Side Table: Vintage Knock-off.
$75.00

1.) Nearly identically proportioned to the genuine Saarinen.
2.) 22" x 14-1/2" x 20" high.
3.) Natural cast aluminum base.
4.) Marine blue faux marble painted table top.
5.) Authentically eased edge under the table top perimeter.

It proudly collected its current patina residing in my Bauhaus, Le Corbusier-era trained architect father?s home for decades.

It comes with an amusing story: My mother purchased it over forty years ago from the annual Dayton's Warehouse Clearance Sale for what she thought was $3.95. She had miss-read the price tag. It was actually $39.50 (on clearance!). Architect Dad said it was such a good copy of the Saarinen original that it was a keeper regardless.

The new authentic Saarinen pedestal tables have lacquered aluminum bases. In my opinion, the natural aluminum looks more pure and honest, but I'm a mechanical engineer and like my engineering materials unadulterated :-). Judge for yourself.

Value
Copies made by Burke in aluminum sell for $150-200, I have just sold one recently,(Burke) for $175 plus $55 for shipping. You can take the top off the base to get it in a smaller box.

They should be stamped 'Arkana' into the cast iron base underneath. The base is also attached differently to that of a Knoll - Should be via 4 screws.

Arkana , Maurice Burke
my father represented Arkana in the Netherlands from 1965 till the early 1970s. We knew Maurice Burke very well and I am very anxious to get into touch with his family. If I remember well, he had two sons, one of them was called Duncan. Arkana had offices in Bath, which my father often visited in the swinging sixties. The factory was based in Falkirk, Scotland.
My father passed away three years ago, but the Arkana furniture that is left is very dear to me and a vivid memory of my father too!
