Hi all,
I just got 8 vintage bertoia side chairs.
However at first view they look real 1 thing realy bothers me:
The base-wires run under the frame.
It is the first time every I have come in contact with this set up.
Could this be a transitional edition between the first production "Sandwich" with rubble borders and the version as we know it know?
Or are these chair vintage reproductions?
Thx!
Laurent

Hi
I have not seen this before, but I don't think it is a reproduction. Everything else about the chair looks right.

Thx NickR60. Any idea at what point in time knoll welded the bars of the seating part to the underside? Would somebody have a catalog picture?

Not sure exactly when,...
Not sure exactly when, although I think it's an earlier method. A lot of the older examples in the UK have these brackets so I know they're right, but can't help you with exact dates.

It's Knoll production
But I would not call it an early example. I think every example of Bertoia wire chairs I have had and which I knew were early (based on upholstery, labels, etc) were either black or white. It always seems to me that chrome became a more popular finish in the 60s and 70s.
Does you cover still have the label? That would provide you with information helpful in dating the chair.

Thanks for the imput!
Sadly, I cannot seem to find any labels on my cover.
Is this possible? Or were the covers always labelled?
Did your early examples have tapered ends on the vertical bars? As you can see in the pictures this is not really the case.
For everyones info: Knoll also confirmed ( a couple of minutes ago) the chair is genuine.

60-70 edition
chair is genuine but indeed 60-70's edition
they did not chromed bertoia chairs in the 50's
old editions have a double wire around the edge of the seat(a thin one)
old editions have thin wires in general.
best!

Thank you all!Small...
Thank you all!
Small question. Some bars are broken and need to be rewelded. Problem is that this Will leave black marks on the Chrome. How visible Will these be if welded by a professional?
Re-chroming is too expensive so should i leave them As is or rislan coat them?
Love to hear your 2cents!
Laurent

depends on where the breaks are
I just had a chrome bird chair repaired by a friend who owns a custom hot rod shop. The breaks I had fixed were at one of the brackets that connect the chair to the base. He welded the broken wires and then ground them down so they looked original. He then touched up the area with some chrome spray paint. The end result looks pretty darn good but the area is hidden by the seat cover anyway so it doesn't really matter.

It's slightly different from mine
I can say that my Bertoia side chair is 100% authentic. I have the purchase order numbers from when they were purchased from knoll international in the late 70's and late 80's. The difference with your Bertoia is that the perimeter wire is welded above the wires that run "left to right" and above the perimeter wire on top of the chair. On my side chairs, this is true only where the back of your legs rub again the chair when in the seated position. The left, right, and top of the chair has the thicker perimeter wire under the smaller wires. I hope you're following me...hard to explain properly.
Other than that, it all looks fine.
Can you show how the glides attach to the chair?
