Longtime reader, first time forum poster here.
I made a huge, unusual impulse purchase today that has me quite excited. I'm hoping the McCobb experts might be willing to share a bit of their knowledge.
I was casually browsing One King's Lane (a sample sale website), when I saw this Paul McCobb 20-drawer chest... in bright purple! I've been a fan of McCobb for years, but have never owned any of his pieces. I've seen this style of chest (I believe it is the Mr. and Mrs. Chest from the Planner Group) in a wood four-legged style and an iron six-legged style, but I like this one even more. My living room (currently gray and white) has been in desperate need of a bright pop of color, and luckily I didn't need to get anyone else's approval for the somewhat outrageous color. 🙂 I'm sure I overpaid ($2799), but I honestly adore the style and color and have the perfect spot for this piece in my home. I had recently been considering having a less expensive and less unique piece refinished in a bright color, so this just seemed perfect.
The chest won't be delivered until late April, but I couldn't resist seeking more information/thoughts about it now. I assume that the knobs are not original. Unfortunately, the One King's Lane sale page contained barely any information, except that it is a Paul McCobb. I have no idea if the label is still attached. The condition is listed as "Good; minor flaws from age and use." I'll post additional photos once it arrives!
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Not really sure
what your question is. As BJ, said, if you like it and were willing to pay that price for it, then great.
Having said that, I think you spent 3x too much for a chest with no label, the wrong knobs, a non-original finish and non-Planner Group legs.
Rago sold one in its' original state back in June for 2300 USD.

I might be a little concerned about the quality
and durability of the finish. It looks almost like there was a semi-transparent stain applied. Some of these may not be particularly light-fast, so you might want to limit UV exposure.
Hume Modern has repro Planner Group pulls available should you want to replace the ones supplied.
Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with buying reworked pieces that make you happy as long as you are aware going in that they may not be of "investment quality".
This piece also came in black
So should you tire of the purple color, you could have it painted black. I would replace those pulls with correct ones ASAP. The pulls are a large part of the appeal of many of the McCobb case goods.
Also, I don't think it's fair to expect the seller to return your money if you have a change of heart. If they did not misrepresent the item, it is not their fault and once you agreed to purchase it, they marked it sold, taking it out of circulation and possibly missing out on other potential customers. If you are uncertain, ask them to hold it for a day or two while you decide. If people see an item marked sold, then for sale again, they are likely to think that there is something wrong with it, not that a buyer flaked out on them. It hurts the sales potential of the item if it goes from for sale, to sold, to for sale. It's not like shopping at Wal-Mart where you can return anything you like for any reason.
Thanks all...
I do plan to replace the knobs with one of the original styles. In fact I'm hoping to get them ordered soon so that they might arrive before the chest is delivered.
Don't worry, I have no plans to cancel the order! I'm still very excited about it. I had been furniture shopping for a long time before I saw this piece, so I was ready to make a purchase and had a particular style and size in mind. I've just never made a large purchase without seeing the item in person first, and impulse buying is seriously out of character for me. I was casually looking for a small hostess gift during my lunch break, and I ended up buying a McCobb chest! I adore the style of this chest, however, with its clean lines and variety of drawer sizes, so I don't think I'll have any regrets.
I'm glad to hear that the frame/legs may be original. This piece was also sold with wood-thread type legs, which I thought was the only wood style. Thanks for the photo Spanky! It's interesting that mine has the additional center leg.
I kinda like it in purple!
Though I do agree that it needs smaller knobs.
Who CARES about resale value, or the possibility that you may have found one for less-- a new purple finish is what you wanted, and that was worth 2,800 to you.
Resale, schmesale... life's short, enjoy your purple chest, and who cares if your heirs can easily unload it.
