On a piece of furniture I built, there are arm rests that are glued into place. However, one of the pieces on top has been damaged beyond repair. I want to remove it and replace it without damaging the wood beneath. The board that I want to remove is 4" wide by 4' long by 3/4" thick.

Any ideas? Thanks!

A
four-foot long arm rest ? Someone has long arms. . .!
Without seeing or hearing of more specific details (what the piece is glued to, for instance, and how large are the actual connections between parts) I can only advise that as much of the wood as possible be cut away, and the remaining thickness be planed, routed, or chiseled down to the glue line.
If the piece were glued on top of vertical wood members like legs -- glued to end grain wood, that is -- it might be possible to pop the joint with a hammer without doing much damage to the legs -- because an end grain glue joint is inherently weak. But I doubt somehow that this is the case.
