meaning of hand made
The joins on the drawers are dove tail and these can be made by a machine jig in minutes compared to the ones that a joiner makes by hand which are made to fit with ONLY one other piece.
Machine made ones will fit any 2 pieces together.
So hence me saying hand made
Simon
I guess if you want to get technical . . .
Any machine used for making wood furniture is at some point touched by human hands. But I think we all know what Simon meant when he said "hand made." 🙂
I've got a few of my own designs around the house that were drawn up in AutoCAD and cut on a CNC machine, then assembled by me. I wouldn't call them hand made, though.
I suppose
I would question the usefulness of "hand made" because (like many another short phrase, like "form follows function") it is too simple to contain much useful information. The one-off object is almost certainly made by hand, but so can be the batch-made series of objects using hand tools, or even a production run of undetermined quantity, if it is "labor-intensive." I can't question Simon's use of the term in connection with this piece, which is clearly well-crafted even if its uniqueness is not known -- but the term raises my hackles because of its tendency to be used as a sales device of (sometimes) doubtful accuracy and, in any event, limited meaning.
Now don't get me started on "burled walnut" !
