Hey All,
So we're trying to figure out a way of adding some extra light to our family room. There are fluorescent tubes above the sliding glass doors, but they're so harsh and bright. We've got two options
First would be just get a cool floor lamp to put to the right of the credenza. That would work, but that spot is reserved for a Jacobson Egg Chair or an Eames Lounge at some point in the future.
Second would be to install a hanging light from the ceiling in that corner. I was thinking maybe a sputnik-style light. I did a quick photo-chop. (below. note the scale is probably off) (in case the image doesn't load for you)
So, do you guys think that a hanging light fixture would throw off the balance of the room? Any other suggestions?
cheers!

your
room is already pretty much already chock full of INTEREST. I would be tempted to go with something more reserved, such as a simple big rice paper globe. Photoshop THAT in and I think you might find it suitable.

now with 100% more bubble lamp
You might be right about it being a bit busy. Think this would be better? Or, you you go with a true globe shape rather than cigar shape?

thanks for the input and complement
here's another shot of our family room from the other direction as well as a shot of the kitchen, which I just finished. The house is a definitely a work in progress, but it's coming along.

Thanks Mark
The house was build in 1962 for the owners of a large Terrazzo floor company here in Dallas. So, naturally, when the house was being built, the owners had poured terrazzo floors with mexican onyx done. The flooring starts on the pathway leading up to the house, goes through the entire house and out the back to form the large covered patio. We're talking around 2700 sq/ft of poured terrazzo. Definitely a unique house, especially for Dallas. I can't imagine what it would cost to duplicate it today.

If you're thinking of a Nelson Bubble lamp, consider the pear shape. Not everyone's first choice, but it has really been growing on me lately. I think it would look terrific in that corner...
I do agree a simpler lamp would be better....lovely home!

sputnik or not..
I agree that the room seems to have tons of interesting things going on. You mentioned that there are fluorescent tubes above the sliders and I'd suggest that you diffuse that. I'v seen this done simply by laying heat resistant paper over the tubes. Cheap fix and it really knocks down the 'gulag effect'. Worth a try...
