If the fabric has much cotton in it, it will could in the washer and will definitely shrink in the dryer.
It will also shed dye in the washer if it's got much cotton content and will come out looking faded compared to the fabric on the frame.
Dry-cleaning is a much safer way to go.

If you're willing to risk fad...
If you're willing to risk fading, then go ahead and wash it on gentle in a machine, or better yet, soak it, drain and spin, rinse with as little agitation as possible, drain and spin. Use COLD water and a detergent meant for cold water. Hot water will cause more fading and shrinking.
I wouldn't do it if it were my sofa. Most upholstery fabrics are not meant to be washed, even when they have the same fiber content as washable clothing.

Same thing
Cold water with as little agitation as possible. The machine is just more efficient at the rinsing part than you can do by hand with things this big. Spinning speeds up the process a lot. (I know this from long experience laundering big things that are supposed to be hand wash only.)
