Just picked up this cool side table. Looks similar to Wendell Castle, its not signed his usually are. It is walnut and heavy. Joiner is very nice. 20"high 17 1/2" x 14" top. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Interesting, and a pleasant form.
Would we expect to see knotty lumber, and mismatched grain (as on the post), in a Wendell Castle piece ? I don't know, as I haven't seen enough of his work . . .

Probably not
Probably not Wendell Castle. But, I noticed a few similarities on a few of his pieces. One had a very similar base with that cleft foot look and another with a similar organic stem. I was hoping his name would point me in the right direction.

I hope you are joking? If not, you might want to reconsider the book project.

That book idea still makes me chuckle.

Those 90 degrees joints that have come loose with wood movement seem rather unprofessional to me. There are much better ways to execute that join.

The joints, which
seem to have suffered wood shrinkage (at least), do not look great. Along with grain appearance, material also wants to be selected for proper seasoning/drying before work commences ?

While it may not be very top...
While it may not be very top end quality, I would be quite happy using it as an end table in my living room. I presume the purchase price was not tied to a Castle attribution.
On a separate note, is the piece designed to be used either as shown or inverted? I like the double foot concept; very much right in the middle of functional furniture and art. In a way, it's a close cousin to the Eames stools.

What does it look like the other
way round? Could it be upside down, maybe? Just wondering.

it
I don't have a pic of the bottom. It looked a little weird flipped over, with that cleft foot or whatever you call it.
