OK, so I'm over here near Geneva looking for houses/apartments and I found this awesome restored winery that was built in 1856 smack dab in the middle of this cool little wine village. My question is, how weird would it look to put modern style furniture in it? My camera ran out of batteries while I was looking at the house so I don't have any pictures of the inside but imagine towering ceilings with original massive exposed beams, original limestone floors on the first floor and wide-plank pine flooring on the two top floors. The walls are all white-washed plaster throughout.
I really, really don't want to have to buy all new furniture for a house that we are only going to live in for 3 years, but I'm having trouble picturing mid-century style furniture in this house. Any suggestions?
When it comes to good design
good stuff looks good in each nice house or building.
I've seen high quality French Provencial furniture in a modern house and it looks just as fine as modern furniture will look in that winery.
There's plenty of American Victorian house in New York, Chicago and San Francisco that has a totally modern look inside, for goodness sake!
The interior sounds completely dreamy,
and perfect for modern furnishings.

I will just do it
and thanks everyone for your encouragement. WHC, that picture that you posted looks uncannily like the winery that we are looking at and look how gorgeous it looks furnished that way! Barry, we are also looking at an apartment in a 1920's building that smacks of Victorian, so your comments are spot on.
As a matter of fact, that particular 1920's apartment is owned by a very old gentleman who is moving into an "assisted living" arrangement. In his living room, he has an original Le Corbusier LC3 with the pony skin, two Le Corbusier black leather club chairs and a Le Corbusier black leather and chrome love seat. He is in his dotage and my husband and I will be negotiating rents with his son. How dastardly would it be to offer the son some money for those 4 pieces? What do you think would be a fair price?
Here is a picture of the outside of the apartment building.
Also
for my American friends, they are absolutely obsessed with Poul Kjaerholm over here. (I'm probably not even spelling that right). Just like we are with Eames or Nelson at home. I mean it is outrageous. If you own anything by him, sell it on ebay.ch or ebay.de. It's craziness!
That's about $2,500, right?
I'd start lower-- maybe you can get them for less.
For all you know, the son may have intended to have the furniture carted off to the dump (do they even have dumps, in Switzerland?).
On the other hand, he may know how desirable the pieces are, refuse the paltry offer, and assume you're a design ignoramus. Hardly the end of the world. You can always offer more.

Today, the Swiss franc was about 90 cents on the dollar, so I think 3000 francs would be about 2800 US dollars, but I could be wrong because I suck at math. We are returning to see the apartment as well as the old winery on Monday, so I will let everyone know what we decide on and I have purchased many extra batteries for my camera so I am now well prepared.
Cheers, Riki, the Swiss Miss
P.S. Have you all noticed that I am now speaking in "Yoda Speak" because I have been speaking French for about 10 days now and they are completely messed up in their word order.:)
