I'm only traveling for a few ...
I'm only traveling for a few days. I went ahead and bought a carry-on size Streamlite Samsonite, in perfect condition with key! But I still want to know what else is out there. I truly have had no luck finding anything that I think is better looking than the Streamlite.
Note: I've always wanted a woodcased piece of luggage with a tiny scoop on the top to sit on. Does that exist? Let's make one.
These aren't the good old days.
Those vintage suitcases are attractive. But they were designed for a time when all your bags would be carried by porters between the street and your train, and when your bags would always be either with you or in the care of someone trustworthy.
Things are different now. Why would you want to lift a heavy bag and carry it one-handed all the way through an airport if you didn't have to? And why would you want to subject expensive leather suitcases to the battering they'll receive in an airport baggage-handling system? Plus, if your old suitcases don't accomodate TSA locks, you have to leave them unlocked or risk having the locks broken for inspection.
Also, I can't remember the last time anyone checked my luggage tags at an airport baggage carousel. Why would you want to advertise the value of your luggage (and presumably its contents) to dozens or hundreds of people who can just pick it up and walk away with it?
When I travel by automobile, I use the old-fashioned leather Michel Clo luggage that came with my car. But if I'm traveling any other way and need to walk farther with my luggage than to the garage, OF COURSE I use nondescript nylon cases with wheels and telescoping handles. Form follows function, etc.
True fastfwd.
But larger Louis Vuitton suitcases/trunks come with a protective cloth zip on outer cover, not totally eliminating scrapes and scars from poor handling...but it helps. And your Aunt Mark wouldn't dream of carrying a suitcase through an airport. That's what the Porter is for.
Happy Easter to all that celebrate,
Aunt Mark

I don't check bags. I carry-on only. I always pack light and rarely remain out of town for extended periods of time. This is the reason I have no use for contemporary luggage functionalities. Luckily, due to these circumstances, I can get away with using something like the Streamlite without being inconvenienced. Of course, everyone here will have a different relationship to traveling.
