I picked up this desk the other day. I have spent several hours attempting to ID it. Normally I am able to figure it out but I'm stumped on this one. There are remnants of a tag in the bottom drawer but not enough for me to figure it out. Bottom of a couple drawers is stamped "made in Norway". I feel like the key may be a clue as well. Any ideas? Thanks, Scott
Is the locking mechanism visible from inside the drawer cabinet? How exactly does it lock the doors shut? That's a pretty neat design. Cdsilva, SDR, lief, and others... does the 'MADE IN _____' stamp generally indicate an import relationship associated with the piece? It would have to, right? Something like this desk, which appears to be quite unique (can't find anything similar), having that mark... I guess I'm just curious about that kind of thing in general. Like, were certain lots designated for this, or was it standard practice. Is there a version of this desk out there which does not have this stamp?
I'm the last person to be asked that question -- but I'll say that it would be helpful, in seeking an answer, to know what percentage of the furniture made in any particular country, in any one year, was exported for sale; and, further, what percentage was expected to be exported, by the manufacturer.
One possible answer is that the maker would automatically stamp everything with the country of origin. There are probably places where that action was made mandatory -- depending on national policy, dictated in part by trade agreements and treaties, for example.
The tambour latch appears to be a simple spring catch, perhaps with a roller ?
