I picked up this desk the other day. I have spent several hours attempting to ID it. Normally I am able to figure it out but I'm stumped on this one. There are remnants of a tag in the bottom drawer but not enough for me to figure it out. Bottom of a couple drawers is stamped "made in Norway". I feel like the key may be a clue as well. Any ideas? Thanks, Scott

What a sexy piece. I love it. What's going on at the bottom of the leg ?

Thanks. The color of the wood below the groove looks a bit different. Is the foot a separate section of wood ?

At certain angles it does look like it's a different color and it possibly was at one time. Maybe it has faded over the years. It is one solid piece. The bottom section below the groove is part of the entire leg

Thanks. It really is a handsome desk. The tambour closures are interesting. One wonders how they stay closed -- considering gravity ?

There is a roller at the top attached to the desk . Can't remember what's on the door. It like a friction closure if that makes sense. You can kind of see it in this pic.

I agree that it is one fine looking desk, albeit one with which I am unfamiliar.
I do see the word "Mobler" in pieces in the bottom part of the sticker remnant, but that probably won't help you out too much.

Also, it's "møbler" and not "möbler" so that rules out Swedish, though it could still be Norwegian but probably not.
Love the key!

It is stamped 'made in Norway' on the underside of a couple of the drawers.

Is the locking mechanism visible from inside the drawer cabinet? How exactly does it lock the doors shut? That's a pretty neat design. Cdsilva, SDR, lief, and others... does the 'MADE IN _____' stamp generally indicate an import relationship associated with the piece? It would have to, right? Something like this desk, which appears to be quite unique (can't find anything similar), having that mark... I guess I'm just curious about that kind of thing in general. Like, were certain lots designated for this, or was it standard practice. Is there a version of this desk out there which does not have this stamp?

I'm the last person to be asked that question -- but I'll say that it would be helpful, in seeking an answer, to know what percentage of the furniture made in any particular country, in any one year, was exported for sale; and, further, what percentage was expected to be exported, by the manufacturer.
One possible answer is that the maker would automatically stamp everything with the country of origin. There are probably places where that action was made mandatory -- depending on national policy, dictated in part by trade agreements and treaties, for example.
The tambour latch appears to be a simple spring catch, perhaps with a roller ?

I can see the latch, but am assuming that you can lock it closed? I don't see anything on the sides of the top drawers, so I'm guessing that it is for the tambour door. What exactly does the key do?

I guess that's a good point... I'm really not at all educated on import/export type stuff. Perhaps English was just the default?

There must be something on the inside of the tambour doors, no?
