My sister works at an employment agency (founded in 1968) who at one time, bought a lot of quality Herman Miller furniture. The founder bought Eames conference tables, a cute typewriter table with a white formica top (which I know have), a large Eames conference table, and some other pieces. (Prior to my sister joining them, they had replaced whatever chairs they had bought at the time.)
But, my sister is using the desk that the original owner selected for his office, and by her description, it seems like it's probably a Stow + Davis solid wood desk. I don't have a picture, and she's looked everywhere on the desk and cannot find a name or a number.
I have seen the desk in person (it's wide and grand with straight wood legs), and I sent her a couple of photographs of Stow + Davis desks from the early 1960's and she agrees it's similar. Her desk had a sloped writing surface, which is unusual, and a single drawer on the left and right, as well as a pull out flat surface on the back of the desk facing the people being interviewed.
My question is how 'good' was Stow + Davis back then? They advertised in Interiors and Internal Design magazines, but I don't know of any designers attaced to their company. I do know that they were bought up by Steelcase sometime in the 1970's.
Any information?
I wouldn't say that Stow...
I wouldn't say that Stow Davis is particularly collectible, but from what I have heard they make some nice stuff. This online seller below seems to think the desks/credenzas are worth a decent price....
