Well, I think that the price...
Well, I think that the price your clock ended up at was pretty accurate... The markings on the clock face are pretty undesirable, so I'd say that's what held the price down a bit. Maybe a perfect one would go for $500? Maybe a little more. The box, etc are of some value, maybe, but too much due to the condition they're in. The fact that this clock is being reproduced by Vitra also reduces its value. Don't expect to get auction house results selling on ebay...
I have a question:
Nick and I have been emailed back and forth and he has a chance of buying an original Steering Wheel clock in the box. It is a direct-plug chronopack type and I was wondering, since I've never had one, how difficult it is to remove the direct-plug and change it to a corded electric model. (I'm thinking about the need for the back plate to be flush to the wall if it'sa changed to a cord model....)
Vitra hands...way too expensive
I mentioned that I bought some extra clock hands, and boy, does Vitra charge a fortune:
I bought:
2 Eye clock clock hand sets @$18.00 ea = $36.00
2 Ball clock hand sets @ $18.00 ea = $36.00
4 Wall clock second hands @ $18.00 ea = $72.00 (!!)
freight charge $8.00
so that was $152.00 plus $9.89 Minnesota tax, $0.22 County tax, and $0.76 City tax
Grand total $162.87.
The taxes were a total rip off since Vitra does not have a business in Minnesota.
What I was expecting is each clock set to include the second and I thought i was buying 4 extra second hands and I did not expect those second hands to cost the same as the pair of clock hands.
Maybe Vitra hasn't ripped me off, but those second at $18.00 a piece is quite expensive.
To be honest, it all sounds...
To be honest, it all sounds quite reasonable to me. I'm amazed they are even able/willing to sell the hands separately from the clocks. $18 for a set seems fair...$8 for shipping seems more than reasonable....$18.00 for a second hand is a bit pricey, but not insanely expensive. (Consider that originals sometimes sell on Ebay for close to $100.00) I am just happy these items are available at all!!!!!!
i just talk to John at ...
i just talk to John at all modern furniture that is where the first series of clocks that we all bought came from ..
well folks no more cheap clocks !!!!
on the website he has listed all the clocks that he will have in stock around May 25,2008 and there has been a 33 percent increase since we all bought them in November and December,
for such ridiculous low give away prices,
John could not be nicer he just got back from China
visiting the factory and he said our American dollar has hit the skids, cost of goods has gone up and he says he is still making the same profit, not like White on White in NYC who chooses to rip everyone off from day one with charging four times what they cost,
John said he was trying to get the blue block clock and the spindle clock and a white astrick clock, and walnut spike clock something that did not come in the original orders, so keep your eyes on their website and they should be available the last of May,
He asked me if we had any other designs but as we fiqured these guys in China would need a original to knock it off and if they can buy the vitra they can dublicate it to the T. pretty amazing,
i think the vitra hands...
i think the vitra hands is really a great deal look at some of the other clock stores on the internet and they have some of the ugliest hand sets i have ever seen,
do not waste your money buying the 18 dollar second hand from Vitra as you can get them for a 1 dollar at klockit same thing.!!!
Just acquired
I just got this Barry... Strongly resembles a clock you posted earlier in this thread. With the exception of 4 screwed in knobs at 12,3,6,9 o'clock's. What I've gather is these hold the thick wood backing to the metal frame.
The weight is significant!
A generous lady literally gave it to me. She purchased it somewhere between '77 & '83. Would like to justly compensate her. I do recall seeing one on eBay not long ago. Do you know what it went for?
