This is the type of Nelson ...
This is the type of Nelson clock that i can afford for 81 bucks on ebay
I actually saw this clock at the Palm Springs show for 300 I liked it but thought it was a little high priced but every thing at that show was, it had the Nelson traditional hands on it ,
I have a feeling that someone removed them and put the Hobby lobby specials on this clock. but I have several sets of the original hands so on they go and it will look great. my plan worked,

nelson whirly bird clock,
i just checked my 1959 Howard miller catalogues
and the whirly bird sold for $60.00 in '59
now sells for $15,000 that is not a bad return on your
money in almost 50 years, what do you all think?

Lloyd:
You got the Whirly Bird clock? Wow, that's a hellava chunk of change.
You know, since eBay started that paranoid removal of full bidder names, I can't be sure who's bidding.
My eBay name is barrymn, so it would look like b*****n
If you're going after something you need bad, and you see my bidding on it too, by all means, let me know and I'll back off.
I'll try not to step on your heels too.

Got one of the clocks I won today
and it's really cool. 14 1/2" across and nearly 4" deep. The hands were bent (don't know if they're original, but they are old). I straightened them out and clocks works beautifully.
I'm not going to try to repair the two wood cracks or try to fill in the edge issues.
The center of the clockfase is metal...probably copper or possibily a bronze-like metal.
It had to have been an expensive clock...it looks like 4758.

barry
actually, your "encrypted" ebay name will not look like that... it is random (or at least it does not match).

That sucks....
I hate eBay doing that.
Occasionally I see someone bidding on an item that I know if not what it appears and I have occasionally emailed the bidder out of kindness. They usually appreciate the information, but I can't do that anymore.
Now, for the sake of 'security' it's all individual "buyer beware".

At that late date, Lloyd,
I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy the clock with either type of hands, or possibily Howard Miller used both types of hands.
Who knows? I get the impression that the end of the Nelson/Howard Miller relationship might have been a bit sticky, and perhaps Howard Miller continued to use the Nelson hands and had to stop due to legal issues.
I could be wrong, but I don't get the impression it was a clean break.

I think you are right on ...
I think you are right on the money Barry...
I have seen to many of the Miller Nelson clocks at the end of the relationship with all kinds of hands,
I have a feeling the boys at Howard miller were making a clean sweep of all the inventory and said lets just stick these hands on this clock and go with it, as a researcher so many things are not adding up with the different hands, and you know as well as i do that the buyers of these clocks in the late 60's early 70s could have cared less about the hand sets, so i will go out on a limb unless someone corrects me, any thing goes with these late issued clocks, you never no what you are getting, just be glad you got it and hopefully at a good price.

Also, Lloyd
considering that 1) they weren't interested in the reissuing series that went to Vitra, and 2) when contact, they know little or nothing about these clocks and didn't keep very good records, makes me think that the ending of the relationship was messy and unpleasant.
On the other hand (no pun intended), if you contact Howard Miller about the traditional Howard Miller clock your grand Aunt Hildy has on her mantelpiece, they can look it up and tell you exactly when it was made and probably can still service it.
Howard Miller is a good company, but when it came to their 20+ year relationship with George Nelson & Associates, they might as well be Exxon or Wal*Mart.....evil and clueless.
