We've recently got a Noguchi table and after I inserted the metal rod into the 2 wood pieces, I noticed that there's still some wiggle room in the base (to extend to a wider/narrower angle). Is this common? As you know, the glass is very heavy and I'm just a little concerned about safety if the base wiggles like that even after the glass is put on.
In addition to that, I currently have the table on hardwood floors. Will adding 3 pieces of leather on the 3 base points help reduce the risk of the base moving? Thanks.

If it's a faithful version,
you won't have a problem and I doubt you'd need the leather pads. At least not under the glass. Maybe they'll help on a hardwood floor, but the table is surprisingly sturdy even if pushed laterally. It would really take some effort to cause the base to fold to the point where the whole structure would collapse.
Ours in on a rug and is rock solid once assembled. You really can't get too much more stable than three widely-spaced points. If the pin is loose, I suppose you could wrap some tape around it to snug it up.

Thanks for the reassurance, tktoo. It is a Herman Miller version. Do you remember having the wiggle point in yours? I was actually thinking about adding the leather pads on the bottom of the legs to increase traction on the floor.

It's been a while, kin,
but I do remember some play involved. I haven't bothered to do anything about it, though.
Unless you have rambunctious kids, I really don't think you need worry.

Oh, it'll be fine...
We use a set of eight as dining chairs around our makeshift dining table which consists of two stacked on top of one another.
I'm sorry.

From personal
experience, I can tell you that it WILL NOT stand up to a 180 lb., (I might be being generous here), drunken girlfriend's elbow and upper body falling from a height of 5 feet, 6 inches.

Ouch, was she OK from that fall, Riki? We're expecting our first child, and that's why I'm more paranoid than usual.

Well..I went to a party recently,
and the 6'7" 275 pound host (a Herman Miller rep) got up on his Noguchi coffee table....and started go-go dancing! And the table was fine...I was shocked. I don't recall the music.
Best,
Aunt Mark

Kin, I can understand your concern.
And it may be that snugging up the pin and putting something under your table to aid traction will help to stabilize further an already sturdy piece of furniture. But, as a father, I must warn you that when they get to be strong enough to push the top off a Noguchi table, you're going to have much more to worry about than them pushing the top off a Noguchi table.
I can't speak to Riki's guests or what goes on at Mark's parties other than to say they all sound like fun.
Lit Up, I won't open that site. The last time I did, I couldn't stop giggling for a week.

She was fine
due to excessive padding and the inherent limberness of inebriation. She was embarrassed and then aghast when she found out the cost of replacing a designer coffee table.
I think, actually, that a Noguchi is a good choice in a family home--no sharp corners. Just keep the little one from launching him/herself off the back of the couch into the middle of it and you should be fine.

Wait,
if it had been a 180-lb man who fell on the table, would it have made a difference somehow? That's kind of an average weight for a 6' guy, isn't it?

Thanks for all the comments...
Thanks for all the comments and sharing. I believe the table itself is pretty solid; it's probably just the idea that it's a heavy piece of glass sitting on top of a 3-point base that seems a little unsettling. In fact, all the freak accidents that happened probably would still have happened had other glass coffee tables been involved instead of the Noguchi.
Btw, love the humor here =)

I didn't think such exciting things happened in Switzerland, you're not friends with Bubbles de Vere Riki?

Maybe a 30 year-old 6' guy, Spank.
I'm 6 feet tall, but I can barely remember 180 lbs.... or 30 for that matter.
I can still lift the top off a Noguchi without problem, though!
