Hi there. I've come to seek the collective wisdom of you Design Addicts.
I recently had my Womb reupholstered by a reputable place (even recommended here on DA!). However, the cushions on the footstool, seat and backrest *seem* a bit overstuffed, and combined with the fact that they are high density foam, it feels like a completely different chair from the womb I dropped off. If I sat in this chair in a show room, I'd say "pretty, but really not comfortable at all"). Perhaps I'm just used to my broken-in womb from before, but I really do think these cushions are a bit too firm or too thick or both and will have to get them remade but I'd like to have an idea of what the original specs are.
Does anyone know what the specs for the womb cushions are? i.e. the appropriate density of foam (foam #?) and thickness? Would Knoll give me this information?
If it matters, the chair was manufactured in 1968.
Thanks Mark
Those photos help a bit. For example, our ottoman cushion seems to be about 1.5 inches thicker than yours, and its seam is nearly an inch above the sides of the footstool (where they curve up).
I also just think the "high density foam" is far too firm for the chair. I wrote too Knoll asking about thickness/density, but of course they responded that it is proprietary information.
Krenit, the chair was reupholstered by a single-person shop in San Diego who has done work for some of the modern furniture stores in the area. He did a beautiful job on the other aspects of the chair.
No offense, Mark
but your photos clearly show every cushion dimension EXCEPT the one that Warrigal seems most interested in.
Warrigal, I can't tell from Mark's photos how thick his ottoman cushion is. I also don't know how the age of his chair or whether it's been reupholstered. I do know that your original cushions were 45 years old, though, so I'm not surprised that the replacements are firmer and thicker.
Especially for a chair that's still in production, I wouldn't expect your upholstery guy to choose the wrong foam. He doesn't have to make any guesses as to the proper specs; Wombs are common enough that he can just walk to a showroom and touch one to see what it's made of.
And in fact, you can do the same thing. Every DWR has a brand-new Womb on display, and Boomerang usually has one or two vintage chairs. Have you visited those stores to see the foam on their chairs?
Anyway, here are photos that show the thickness of my (reupholstered, comfortable) vintage Womb cushions: Top photo shows how I'm measuring the ottoman cushion, middle shows the ottoman-cushion thickness (4"), bottom shows the seat-cushion thickness (also 4"). I didn't feel like unclipping the back cushion, but it also appears to be 4" thick.
Thanks Fastfwd
Your photos help a lot. Yes, from looking at photos online and trying to gauge comfort, it seems these cushions are about an inch too thick (see the photos I've taken below). One inch is seems negligible, but it makes a difference.
It's also *extremely firm*! Much firmer than our Papa Bear seat cushion, which is 4" thick and definitely softer foam and much more comfortable (Papa was reupholstered several years ago by a prior owner).
- will "high density foam" compress?
- Any thoughts on what foam density/foam number I should request?
And Fastfwd, you bring up a good point about flipping the cushions. To answer your question, there is no discernible difference to me - it seems like the seam is in the middle, whereas on photos I see of other wombs, it looks like the section above the seam on the seat cushion is flatter than the lower section.
Photos are below (please excuse the computer and other clutter but I'm working from home today from the comfort of the Papa Bear chair)
