There have been a lot of postings recently about knockoffs. I was in NY this weekend and did some shopping around.

Someone asked about "White" furniture industries. Verdict: overall poor quality. Some pieces were okay. Notably the Saarinen style tables. And their Nelson benches/Noguchi tables were okay. Their Barcelona was comfy too.

Anything Eames was freakin weird looking! The fiberglass buckets were splotchy and thin/flimsy feeling. The La Chaise was dull and uncomfortable, and the plywood chairs were oddly proportioned. I got the feeling that most of the engineering work had been done from photos - so everything looked just a hair off.

Oh- and the LeCorbusier was like sitting on a pile of cardboard. It was terrible. The frame was rickety, the cushions were uncomfortable. Blech.

I also made my way up to Modernica to look at their "Eames" fiberglas chairs. They are beautiful - altho the surface was still not comparable to an original. However, if there is a color youve just got to have they're the place.

The Eames Lounge Exhibit was fascinating as well. I recommend it, if only just to see the charming plywood elephant.
