Softpad gas lift problem..

..I have a 1980s Vitra EA 217 with the gas lift system - however when you sit in it the chair lowers itself into the lowest setting, and once you get off it reverts back to it's highest setting.

Obviously there is an issue with the gas lift - can they be re'gassed? If not, how do I remove the gas strut? I have found a place that can provide a new one for £40-60 - $80/120.

That sounds
like it could be a brake or clutch problem, rather than a loss of pressure ? I'm not familiar with the mechanical details of these units, but based on the symptoms that's a suggestion.
The "gas" in these units is air, by the way -- a gas nevertheless, as my friend said.

Thanks - Yeah I think u might be right, it did cross my mind because the actual up/down action is fine - there is just something not doing it's job in there. Any ideas from anyone else? Might have a go at stripping the chair down.
