thanks for the feedback!
i wondered if it was good. i mean, i love it. but, it's *hard* to impress you guys! so, thank you. i think it's original fabric - looks hand sewn on one edge. there feels like metal inside, kind of springy. but i agree, if i was made of gold, i'd buy some fabulous wool and spruce it up!

Nice phonegirl!...I have a 3 seater model (with the slat back) also by GJ.
I lucked out, buying it from CL, the only thing to go on was a grainy dark photo, a bizarre sideways shot of half a cushion and a bowl with a hamster in it, but I knew... thankfully the original spring cushions were black leather, still in great shape.
Are you reupholstering yourself? I hear there's a fella in the Junction who does superior work but have yet to visit the shop.
Solange!
thanks! I'd be very interested in checking out the guy in the Junction. Can you share details? After checking out the fabric suggestions, I'm thinking I'd like to recover it. The beige, is, well, beige and it's not wool and saggy when you get up from sitting on it. Also missing one band on the bottom.
thanks again!
You have the
original cushions with innersprings. Replace the webbing or Expersprings or whatever you have there and see how the cushions feel. If you don't find them comfortable at all, I think it's ok to replace them with good quality foam (preferably latex but it's pricey). But save the original sprung cushions for a future owner. (They might also have latex foam over the springs and if so it's probably dried out.)
Check out Modern-Fabrics.com for Maharam/Kvadrat fabrics at a discount. They recently had a bunch of Hallingdal. I think it was maybe $38/yd? You'll need about 6 yards if you don't do welt. That's just a rough estimate obviously.

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadian DA ers!
phonegirl, he's on Dundas W. but the name of the shop is eluding me at the moment...
I'll defer to spanky on this, but bench cushions with no welt are a pretty straightforward job. It shouldn't be hard to find someone to do it well. I do suggest getting a solid quote on paper from whoever you choose prior to starting....
I'm hesitant to throw any names out, it would be based on reviews only...my guy retired a few years ago and I haven't needed an upholsterer yet.
PG, you've got moxie... a few online tutorials, a dry run or two making cushions with muslin before slicing up the good stuff...what do you think? can you sew a straight line? 🙂
Box cushiones are basic
upholstery for anyone who calls him- or herself an upholster. That said, the main problems I've seen with poor jobs are:
1. Inappropriate fabric (which will not be an issue if you provide it yourself and you know what you're doing)
2. Poor fit--this could be an issue when recovering existing sprung cushions because the dimensions aren't all square and straight like on a block of foam.
3. Unfinished seams - no-welt cushions usually look best when the seam allowances are topstiched down. It's more finished looking. Some upholsterers (and many DIYers) skip this step.
4. too thick cushions (rarely are they too thin)
Ask to see box cushions that the person has made and look at the fit and the finishing. If they look at all sloppy, leave.
