Can anyone recommend a less expensive console / credenza to store components under a wall mounted tv, I like the retro-modern clean look of this crate and barrel one
(the wieden) for $400 but was curios if there is a cheaper alternative (especially since this has to be assembled). In particular I like the square design, metal base and open shelves so that components can work with remote controls.
Thanks
!
And I thought I was cheap, it never really pays to buy furniture like that, it will need to be replaced sooner rather than later and over time you'll just be wasting material resources, the labour of others and your own money.
Why not go to a local furniture maker and get them to rip you up a good quality sprayed plywood box with sliding doors? Long and low? The dimensions would fit your room too. There are all sorts of knock down fittings (hafele) for shelves and legs...perhaps something like Morrisons Plan cabinets?
And you can get it resprayed every few years if you have too.
NO MDF!
Tripp,
how about something like this? It's not perfect, but the dimensions are about the same, it has open shelves, it's solid wood and might serve you better since budget is a concern. (It's about $300 including shipping.)
Perhaps you could remove the legs and add ones more to your liking.

Why not an authentic long credenza from the 60's or 70's with a brown marble top
It's usually the marred top of a decent piece or the orange wood color mismatch with something period but not PERFECT that makes a thrift shop find unusable for design. If you're a new collector don't refinish but preserve and update the piece with a dark brown marble top and newer hardware.(save the old if you don't know what you've got). I learned this the hard way. It might even add more zing than the deliberately chosen newer item. Do espresso accents with pottery pieces or wicker accents.
I went 'latreasures' path
and got a really nice early 60's office credenza. My deal was very sweet...free! All it took was some elbow grease to clean up the finish, some new handles and a marble top that I got as an off cut. It looks really great now and has plenty of storage for all the components for both TV and stereo and for all the disks, etc.
