I first thought about adding to LRF's 'To my friends in the European community!!!' thread, but since I want to start a discussion especially about shipping, I thought it was better to just start a new one...

LRF is right, there are several good deals for us European buyers at the moment. -At least if we're looking for smaller items, which can be shipped with USPS.

I agree with Nick and Robert that the import taxes are often very high and sometimes it just doesn't seem make sense to pay as much for shipping, insurance and taxes, as I paid for the item itself in the first place... And on top of that, with the low dollar, prices on many ebay items are actually raising, simply because the buyers suddenly have more money...

Anyway, I wanted to ask if anyone here on the forum has any good ideas for shipping larger items from the US to Europe (Sweden in my case)? I'm thinking about sofa's, tables, sideboards, etc etc. Are there any companies that offers to pick up, package and ship items for a reasonable cost? My experience is that they usually are extremely expensive, especially if they have to pack the item as well...

Any ideas?

This brings up a point regarding the forum
i wish Patrick and Alix could come up with a way to use each person country of origin. This is such an international forum that underneath the "posted by barrympls" it would say United States.
This would help because people make comments of avilability in their country or town, but most of us don't know where their country or town is.

I agree Barry, it would help immensily. In regards to international shipping, I too am in search of an answer. However, my interest is from the UK to the States.

Me too
I'm in the US and I'd love to find an affordable way of getting a couple of the Vitra pieces sent from the UK or Europe to the US without it costing an arm, leg and foot.

.
The packing by outside firms is what seems to drive the cost way up also the method,by ship (ground) quite slow or air. When buying an object you must accept the fact the object cost:the TOTAL.It sounds rather grand but Ebay sellers esp in the U.S.A.can easily sell only inside the USA,and do quite well.A large number of ebay sellers in England sell a large amount to USA buyers...

Actually, most sellers I...
Actually, most sellers I have been in touch with are happy to sell to Europe as long as the shipping part is taken care of by the buyer.
If there was a shipping company that specialized in inexpensive pick up, packing and shipping from residential addresses, there would be a quite big market opening up I think... But the quotes I have gotten so far from the couriers who are recommended by the bigger auction houses are usually extremely high, not to mention the rates of UPS or FedEx...
