Hi, everyone -
I have a set (42" table with white laminate top + 5 chairs) -- label under one of the chairs says "Metalcraft Products in Lynwood, California) - so not an original Saarinen. Anyone know what kind of value it would have? or how I could find out? (it's been in the family the whole time, very good condition) ... base is muted, not glossy...
Thanks for any help you can provide!
That's not really fair.
It may be true that Missy's set is worth no more than a similarly-sized, similar condition set that ISN'T styled like Saarinen's, but it's inaccurate to say that the value of a set like that is only $2. Used dining sets -- even ugly old characterless nailed-together pine dining sets -- generally sell for more than that.
I have no idea what this particular set actually sells for, but I've seen it advertised for around $500.
Not it's real value but...
Not that this is it's real value but I did some research on the small side tables. People sell knock offs for about $200-$300. I've seen the original knoll side table selling for about $500-$800. And that's just a small one.
But prices are very subjective. Those are most likely store prices or ridiculous ebay prices. You wouldn't be able to sell a knock off for that much on your own.
I'd say your's could be around $200. But I can see why it's worth $2 to some of those purist.
Prices
Well I have a cute vintage knockoff set that I bought for $99 on Craigslist. I think I got a good deal even though my set is in crappy shape and needs a tonne of refinishing.
Like many people, I'd never be able to afford the real thing, so I like a vintage knockoff. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
What I do think is wrong are the current knockoffs that are so cheap and flimsy and scream that they're cheap copies.
Anyhow, back to price - look around and see what people in your area would pay for a knockoff vintage set. I know here I could get about $500 once my set is in decent shape.
