A few months ago I asked what kind of patio chairs I should buy and was told to buy cheap Russell Woodard and have them powder coated. I just bought these two chairs on ebay. I paid 202.50 for both chairs and I can pick them up, so shipping is free.

My questions are: 1. When you said cheap, did you mean 101.25 or did I pay too much? 2. What kind of business does powder coating? Like an autobody shop? 3. What would a reasonable estimate be for powder coating these two chairs? and, finally, 4. Why can't I just spray paint them with Rustoleum white paint?

Thanks! P.S. They are so cool, aren't they?

Look up powder coating in the yellow pages, or try google. Cost wise...I would figure in the $200-$400 range, 400 is quite steep. Wonderful chairs!

Generally, 150 each, has been market price for these. They appear to be the higher back version, which isn't as hot.
Why powder coat when they don't even look rusty?

Thanks for input
I think I paid a reasonable amount. BTW, Woof, if you could see my yellow pages, you would hoot. It's probably no thicker than the circular that arrives in your Sunday paper. I live in a town of 6500 people. I have a friend who owns an autobody shop and I will inquire with her if they have the capacity to powdercoat anything. I haven't actually picked these up yet, so I will assess their condition when I do.
Nobody addressed the issue of white Rustoleum paint. Will that rust through in spite its claims to the contrary? Thanks.

Painting them yourself is...
Painting them yourself is pretty straightforward if you take your time and work in a clean space you can great results even with rattle cans, the biggest issue will be removing the old finish and any rust, if this isn?t done thoroughly the finish won?t be great and you run the risk of the rust returning
Is it a painted or a plastic coating? (like a Bertoia chair)
If it?s painted ideally they should be media blasted to remove the old paint and rust if you haven?t got a blaster in the local area you could strip them yourself with a DIY chemical stripper although this would be quite fiddly and messy to do the mesh construction
If its is plastic coated (rislan?) it is quite tricky to remove blasting isn?t usually strong enough whilst burning it off can weaken the metal, there is always the option of having them proffesionally chemically dipped to remove the plastic
For durability and ease I would definitely go for a powder coating especially if they are living outside, here in the uk you would be looking at around £60 for the two chairs including blasting

i'd suggest spray painting a tropical color. i've done this a number of time with various woodard pieces and they look great. powder coating is a waste of money.
you got a great deal. i'd buy as many woodard chairs as i could for $100 apiece. retail in nyc or LA these are $350-500 each.
