I guess IKEA
The C&B cushions will most likely lose their shape within a few years, or at least the back cushions will. But they're pretty easy to replace, just get some foam cut to shape and wrap a lot of thick poly upholstery batting around it and stuff it all back into the covers.
That said, the C&B sofa still looks clunky.
The $2000 one is nice but as you say, you'd be uncomfortable letting the kid on it, and it's a bit high in price.
The IKEA cushions will also break down over time, probably sooner than the C&B's, but by then you'll be ready for something better. I doubt either the C&B sofa or the IKEA one will have much resale value in 3-4 years, so you're essentially looking at spending another $350 now for something that looks clunkier.
That's how I see it, anyway.
It can take a long time to find the right used sofa. Ditto on floor models, though when you do score, it's a lovely thing.

The eq3 Hugo we have has...
The eq3 Hugo we have has been an okay sofa, pretty comfortable, fairly solid construction in comparison to the other lower priced options we considered. We don't have an Ikea here whitespike, so I can't compare. A friend had the short Klippan (or spellit?), and the only thing I seem to recall about it was that it seemed light as a feather. It would probably be a better choice though for you with regard to care/cleaning, as it is made for easy slip-covering, etc.
Possible deal breakers for the eq3 would be that the seat cushions are attached on most of the more appealing models, including the Hugo (back cushions are loose). And if I recall correctly - at least when we purchased ours 4 or 5 years ago - the only upholstery choices were microfiber and/or leather. That may have changed. EQ3, by the way, is a brand of Palliser (Canada).
Hope you find a sofa that will work well for you.

Room & Board Reese Sofa
My friend Pauline just received her Reese sofa from Room and Board. I think she said it was sent from somewhere on the east coast. The shipping, according to her, was $170 extra, shipped here to Oregon. That seemed reasonable. I think the sofa was $1400-1700, I can't remember exactly. I saw it two days ago. My impression was that it was very well made. The cushions felt substantial but not too firm. Comfortable. I felt like the sofa would hold its shape very well, and not get loose areas of fabric from use, etc. I liked the quality. She had stopped in a Room & Board store to see how comfortable she thought the sofa was before she placed the order.

DWR Bantam. In the olive color.
I visited a friend last sunday. They have a three month old and a two yr old.
Their sofa, from DWR is a disaster. Not the kids fault. The seat cushion is
losing its shape and the fabric is full of pills. Only two years old.
Another friend has two of the ikea Kramfors in leather with the jumping age
of 5, 7 and 9 and all their friends. The sofas looked great after a year, last
summer. I can't ask anymore. Everybody does and they are sick of it. I'll see
them in a few months.
Even though i have decided to rebuild my classic, since it is custom to fit the
room, i'm always on the lookout for quality. I could never buy a used sofa
unless recovering fit in the budget. For the same reason i would never buy a
used mattress. (eew)

The Bantam is faulty. A friend on mine has one and it looks bad after just three years of so. The seat cushion has no shape anymore ... completely frumpy.

Ubiquitous Bantam (in Olive)
Hmm...I've had an olive Bantam for about 2 1/2 years now (cheap, from a dwr warehouse sale).
It only gets light use and i'm a small guy, but it still looks great.
After googling "dwr bantam" though, i'm finding about an equal share of complaints vs. praises.
That might be bad. Or good.
I hope it doesn't turn out to be a defective design as my friends just had one delivered because they liked mine so much.
Ugh...these things are everywhere, apparently. I'm starting to get sick of it already.

Room and Board
Oh, and though i've commented on them before...
Room and Board is definitely NOT high-end, investment-quality furniture.
But much of their stuff is decent, good-value-for-what-you-pay for. They won't be walking away with any design awards, but on the whole, their furniture isn't embarrassing to own or look at.
Oh, and their customer service has always been very attentive.
Buy the fancy stuff later, when you can afford what you really want.

Did you make a decision about a sofa yet? I was in IKEA yesterday and sat on a few. The Karlstad that you were considering had very firm seat cushions and very soft back cushions, a combination which I find very uncomfortable. But they may not use the same density foam consistently. I've sat on other sofas of theirs that varied a lot within the same model in firmness.
The Karlstad floor model looked pretty schlumpy. The back cushions were kinda saggy and the whole thing just looked a bit down and out. Not crisp at all.
Have you considered their Arild sofa? It has metal legs and exposed frame edge along the bottom like the Jane sofa that you are looking at. It's a little on the firm side as far as the feel. It's also leather, which may not be on your list at all, I forget. Leather does stand up to kids quite well, though. And it's only $999. I think it will look a lot better than the Karlstad after a few years of wear and it doesn't cost a whole lot more. It's a very good-looking sofa for the money.
It comes in a dark brown. I remember it looking a bit sleeker than it does in this photo. Maybe it was next to some really fat sofas.
Their Stockholm sofa is also not bad and I think it actually comes with a 25 year warranty (maybe not, though). I didn't like the sit of it as well as the Arild but that's a personal thing. It has loose back cushions.

a deal for only today
I found a deal 3 hours away for one Room and Board Lenox 80" sofa with a matching Lenox loveseat for $1200.
Both have stock charcoal upholstery.
Has anyone seen this in person. A friend of mine would go pick up, so I won't have a chance to see first - which is freaky. But given that The sofa will be $650 and the loveseat for $450, I feel confident that it'll be better than anything I would get at that price - you can only get IKEA for that. I also feel I could probably resell for the same if all else fails....
Another pain is the dark fabric with my light cat... ugh!
Thanks...

Thanks for the review! I have decided I just can't do IKEA for this. I think ultimately it's frumpiness in contrast to my Eames, Nelson et al would bum me out way too much.
I liked the Arild too, in terms of IKEA sofas. But not for me methinks!

GET RID OF THE CAT
You are going to have kids; get something you can afford that doesn't have to last longer than ten years.
I have a nice slipcover !!
USE it! slipcovers will SAVE your investment for at least another five years.
And please folks, don't have cats if you want nice furniture. Look at craigslist; a million people are selling cat scratched upholstered furniture. Like my daughter's leather couch ($5,000) a roommate's 'new' cat shredded. She got rid of the cat, and the roommate.

Please, Lucy....
I have two cats, both declawed (front paws), and they treat my furniture just fine. I have to remove hair, but the joy I get from them exceeds the hassle of keeping the sofa hair-free.
I'd rather buy at Room and Board and have two cats than buying the rather poor quality furniture from Ikea!

Another idea
Hi. Try the Paramount from Blu Dot. I have it in the 80". It looks great and is really comfortable, despite not being all that deep. One drawback is that it only comes in two colors, charcoal and khaki. But things the color of dirt don't show dirt! I got the charcoal because it's the darker of the options and I have two kids and one cat. So far so good.

Whitespike since the Ark writing this may not be the answer you are loooking for, but I believe it to be a reasonable reply. I use only Knoll Pfisters in two different leathers and colors (Volo & Sabrina) and fabric (Mink Velvet) in two different sizes (regular and petite) with several matching club chairs in three different rooms in my home. I do however make extensive use of the Philippe Starck Bubble Club sofas and chairs by Kartell for my exterior. I have assembled several sets recently for my sister and more for me (always more) at 25.7 cents on the retail dollar using Craigslist within a 300 mile radius of my home (metropolitan city). These meet a requirement of nearly indestructable with acceptable design logic. DWR (beneath me) at one time sold cushions (an abomination for this design) that make a reasonable comfort level (based on rotation molded plastic) into a softer seating surface. When a child attains a level of maturity and responsibilty to enjoy (not destroy) fine furniture the Bubble Clube may be moved to the backyard, sold again on Craidslist with very little if any depreciation, or "given" to a friend with a new family in a similar situation with an acceptable net cash loss. Room and Board is pedestrian at the very best and markets to the less discriminating client.
