So I recently got a vintage Risom Armchair for $300 off CL. I talked the lady down from $450. It had the original owner it's entire life, and was bought in 1953...along with everything else at the owners estate. It's color is not the most attractive (yellow orange), and it all kind of blends together with the wood. The webbing on the chair is in worse condition than i had thought from the photos, but I still wanted it. What's your take on replacing the webbing? Am I taking away from the value? Is this chair worth anything to begin with (aside from it being a Risom chair)? I'm thinking of rewebbing it myself with a Knoll kit for $80 in flax...

Whats your take?

My take - and others will...
My take - and others will probably disagree - is that you should worry more about what will make you happy. If you think the webbing would look better in a different color, then go for it. I'm of the belief that you shouldn't buy as an investment but should buy, rather, for your own enjoyment.

Flax...eh...
I have one in the linen color (I'm guessing it's flax) that came out of the magic dumpster. I don't love the linen color against the birch/maple, altho maybe yours would look a little better beacuse your wood has probably darkened. My wood is pale and the colors blend together. If you can, check out the other Knoll samples, there are some beautiful complex colors - a rusty cinnamon, bluey grey, a greyish green. And of course red and black and yellow.
I still haven't gotten around to rewebbing mine - leaning towards the cinnamon - but it's worth consulting a pro. If you screw up the tension on one of the straps you'll experience something akin to wearing a thong. 🙂

cinnamon?
thats the color...
cinnamon?
thats the color i want...but they dont make it anymore. like a rust? the Nutmeg i got a swatch of today, and i really dont like the way the nylon/cotton blend looks...it looks way to plastic.
the wood on my chair is definitely darker maple, that's why it hink the natural will look good. well see. thanks for your input!

Yes, nutmeg
That sounds like the swatch Knoll sent me. I kind of like the look of the nylon blend. The cotton webbing just seems to invite staining. But then again I'm a guy and prone to eating spaghetti in my chair in front of the telly...so the nylon also has the cleanable appeal 🙂
whatever you choose, post a before & after picture so we can ooh, and aaah.

rewebbing risom chair
i recently purchased two vintage risom lounge chairs. the webbing was a beautiful rich brown color, but now is sun-faded and stained. i would like to replace the webbing, but am not sure about the best way to do that to preserve the integrity of the chairs. where would i find a knoll rewebbing kit?

Restoration of Risom & Snelling Chairs
Hi - came across your thread and am presently trying to trace down the Knoll webbing for the chair. Have been onto the Knoll website & emailed them with little sucess.
I guess my question is where in heaven do I find the webbing on the Knoll website. I hope you can help.

I just got some webbing...
I just got some webbing samples from Knoll. I have the contact info for the person at Knoll I dealt with. I'll ask his permission to post his info here or you can post your email address (if you dare) and I'll send you his contact info. Private messaging would enrich this wonderful forum, no?

Risom Armchair Reweb
Wonderful news - lets know how far off before your contact lists his name etc. since my chairs are waiting to get re-webbed. If unable to list the info within the following days - I may have to think about how best to provide my email add.

Here's the response I got:
Thanks for your email and thinking of me as an additional resource for the "Design Addict" community. In lieu of my contact information, we would simply recommend anybody with inquiries contact the Knoll showroom closest to them. There are 16 showrooms across North America and over 20 international locations. They can be found through visiting our website at www.knoll.com and using the locator tool.
In addition, any of the authorized KnollSpace retailers such as Design Within Reach, Hive Modern, etc. are also able to obtain replacement webbing kits for clients.
For Risom side chair with webbed back: 666C-WB-KIT-(webbing color suffix)
For Risom side chair with wood (open) back: 666C-KIT-(webbing color suffix)
For Risom stool: 667-KIT-(webbing color suffix)
For Risom Lounge: 654L-KIT-(webbing color suffix)

Just wondering whether you got a price from your Knoll contact
regards price for the 654L-Kit (Re-Upholstery Kit)- for the 'Arm Lounge' chair?
I have been given a cost from a Knoll distributor/sales room (down here on the opposite side of the planet)of $143.00 which sounds a little excessive. Did Knoll send you samples since they won't here. One has to go into the show room - which is no great deal but I always think one is better off with a sample he can put alongside the chair at hand.

Around 90 bones US for 25 yar...
Around 90 bones US for 25 yards.
It is just two inch webbing (cotton vs. cotton/nylon). The cotton samples I have don't exactly match the type of webbing on my vintage chair so I wouldn't feel obligated to go with Knoll. I'm sure you could visit a fabric store and get something - I didn't have any luck here but I know it's out there.
I would have loved to find a dark brown like what is on my chair now. No such luck so I went with Knoll's dark grey. There are miles of black webbing out there if you are OK with black. You could even find some old WWII parachute webbing at a military surplus store which was on the chair originally I understand.
You sound a bit stressed by the process. I understand (I tried to get rust out of the inside of metal chair leg recently). Try to have fun and post the before and after pics of your chair. I'll do the same.
