I have been tracking Jason Lees for a while. His use of color with wood is very unique, as is his mixing of styles- the asian influence is particularly noticable.
All design is derivative, it's all about what you derive and how you put your own personal stamp on it that keeps things fresh and moving forward. My prediction is that this guy is going places. And I hope he does. America needs more home grown talent.
