I also have had several of these in different sizes and the original finish was definitely oiled.
The wood is Afrormosia, a Central/West African hardwood, more dense than teak, but less grained than rosewood.

Just one question; how should I go about prepping and removing the old oil/wax?

There are
proprietary wax and polish removers. Liberon do one, but I'm sure there are many.
