Hi all, long time lurker here! About a month ago, my wife and I were driving down a state highway in TN on a warm fall day. We passed a garage sale and nearly crashed, as I noticed an Eames lounge chair out in the front yard. Long story short, I chased the lady out of it(she was running the sale from the chair, out in a muddy lawn!) I bought the chair and ottoman for $10. We drove home totally giddy about the find of a lifetime. I am totally at a loss to identify the chair. The labels have been removed, as you can see from the pictures. This is a chair thats been heavily used for 20 years according to the owners. But what do they know, they just let the beautiful thing go for $10. I am pretty sure it's not the genuine article from the bases- but they look like they may be replacements. They read "Frank Doerner Company, Waterloo Canada" Who made this? If it's not an Eames, someone was surely sued over the similarity! I need some advice on getting it redone. I have been quoted some pretty awful prices by people "in the know" about the chairs- like $1100(vinyl)-2052(leather). I know what a monumental ripoff the modern furniture market is, so I am a little suspicious of these prices. I want to supply an upholsterer with marimekko barkcloth. How should I find a good upholsterer, and what should I really expect to pay? I'm a school teacher, I don't have two grand to drop on a chair. Can't wait to hear your responses!

your chair is a great chair manufactured in the 70s for the Federated department store chain, Foleys bloomingdales Richs, and lots more Now all stores are Macys.
Selig and plycraft had already closed their doors but that has a great stand, very similar to the Herman Miller chairs and nice arms, That chair with nice vinyl would cost you around 400.00 , to recover with leather 650.00
I am sure you can find someone in your area to recover it I don't think that it would be that difficult. for the 10 dollars that you have invested i believe that you would have made a nice investement with new covering on it.

Thanks for the helpful reply! What tipped you off that this chair is the one you say?
Those are closer to the sort of price I was expecting. I love modern furniture, but I don't trust any business that attempts to pull off a gouging like that.
Hate to say it, but I'll be a lot better off taking this to someone who doesn't know what it is or what it could be worth.

Dk
Its also not a terribly difficult DIY project if you've got some time and some spare room. I've done two myself, our fair Spanky has done about six at this point. At most you need a staple gun, some leather, some sandpaper, and some polyurethane.
There is much more detailed info in an exchange between Spanky and myself... link below. Good luck!
