Hello, I picked up an upholstered eames fiberglass chair today at an estate sale for $2.00 today. It was in horrible condition. the upholstery was filthy an torn beyond repair. I removed the cover scrubbed the fiberglass, sanded and polished the base, sanded and painted the pole. Now i am wondering where can I get a new cover for the chair?

Befores.

Retro Redo
Is the only place I know of that does reupholstery of the eames shells. Since there is no advertising I'd say just google RetroRedo. Cost is gonna set you back about 200ish, maybe a little more, but they are perfectly done.

Not easy that. I can vouch from experience. Restoration is a fulfilling process, whatever the size.

Yes, the base looks great! Can I ask how you did it? I've got one of those bases that's looking worse for wear and could use some sprucing up. Any tips?

thanks guys I will try retroredo.
as to how i polished the base. I went to the hardware store and got a scrubbing pad specifically for metals. used that dry got all the rust and caked dirt off. I followed that up with 600 grit sand paper. then a 2000 grit sand paper wetsand.
after that I used a wool polishing pad in a drill with meguiars 105 ultimate cut compound. then finished off with some nevr dull. It took me about 2 hrs and sore hands and arms to get it to where it is.

why reupholster? leave the fiberglass finish open, it looks better imo. since i've noticed the seats have no holes like the armchair, i would sand the fiberglass down and apply penetrol. but that's just me. nice work on the base. must've worked up a lot of elbow grease.

Sanding
If you have sanded the fiberglass at all I wouldnt leave the shell exposed. More than likely you've exposed some of the fiber, which gets very itchy on bare skin. I had a shell that had been exposed to a lot of weather the fiber was coming through - know from experience.

Retroredo charges like $200, that is a little much for my budget chair. I will prob. just leave it the way it is. It just looks real dirty because the chair has dirt in the fibers. What grit do you start sanding with?

Don't forget that little note on the bottom of the page that says:
"**NOTE** I do not recommend that penetrol is used on white shells, as it will yellow slightly over time. In that case I'd use a standard clearcoat."
