Has anyone reupholstered these before? I got two of these a couple of weeks ago and although there are no tears in the upholstery, it is stained beyond salvaging (unless someone knows a miracle cleaner that I don't know about). So I'm considering either having them reupholstered or doing it myself. It doesn't seem like it would be a big deal...somehow take the rubber molding off the edge of the chairs and remove the upholstery. The foam seems to be in good shape, but who knows what I'll find once the cloth is removed.

So is it that simple? Or is this going to be some kind of Pandora's box that I wish I hadn't opened?

Forthcoming. Will snap pics tonight.
Also, there is some light rusting and minor pitting on the chrome. I got most of the light rust with some fine steel wool, but I suppose there isn't much that can be done with the pitting?

no Pitting will not go away, for some reason every girard stand that i have ever had has bad pitting must have been something in the process that Herman miller did back in the 50 and 60 s

While you could certainly make them look cool, I doubt they will be worth the hassle unless you're willing to have them professionally done. Maybe LRF could shed some light on this. I think he has had some recovered before - not sure.

I've got a set of 4 HM DCMs in walnut around a 47" Knoll Saarinen table. I wanted a couple of extra chairs for more guests and these were cheap, cheap, cheap...if I could get them looking presentable, they'd be worth dragging out for those occasions. It would be nice to have at least the same style of chair, although not the same finish.
I'd like to try to clean them up better, but I'm not sure what to use...I tried foam, but that didn't even put a dent in the staining. Maybe lighter fluid?
How much do you reckon a reupholster would be? The foam seems to be in good condition.

heres how to reuphoster Eames chairs
we have done 100s of those they were in all the public libraries in th 60 to the 90s take the band off pull the cover off.
get a sander and get all the foam off. (outside) that is the fastest and best way to remove that crap and you will need to get rid of the old foam or lumpy,
re foam you can use a sharp knife, glue down, make your cover and spray glue to foam ( fabric or vinyl it drys real fast and let it sit, cut the excess and get new crimp cords, i will get you the name or look on google they are at all auto stores, you can not re use the old cause they will crack, and not go back on.
We charge 150 for a redo on those with vinyl
you should be able to do it, if not send me a email for any help.
