Are there other companies in the US that do Eames Shell reupholstery? I've been to Retro-redo and they look great except for the price tag. $250 seems kinda steep for a chair I paid 75$ for. I'm cheap, I admit it. I'd like to refinish this chair in something fun without breaking the bank.

you get what you pay for
i own retro redo and we redo eames shell chairs sent to us from all over the world , just this week we had 2 chairs from London and 4 from Japan.
We try to be the least expensive and we have literally gotten it down to a science .
As we are aware there are very few people in the USA that can redo the chair, the chairs made forty years ago have turned to corn meal and the foam is dead as the vinyl and fabric
we offer the maharam fabric ast our cost and charge between 225 and 250 for a redo of the chair . and we furnish a new crimp cord . as we can not use the same old one cause the break . please feel free to email at lfadem@cox.net or check our website www.retroredo.com

Retro Redo
For all people .... please feel free to email me with your questions about mid-century chairs.
we have redone 100's of chairs by almost every designer of this period , and if I cannot answer your question, I can at least direct you to people who can answer them ,
Once again mid-century furniture is on the rise again after several years
of Eames design slowdown. ( I think since the Asian market bought up almost all the Eames surplus cheap on Ebay ... they have gotten not only expensive but harder to find good shells. contact me at lfadem@cox.net or this forum.

I know you get what you pay for...but sometimes its hard to find the money for the best work.

Retro Redo
I use to photograph all my work when i first started out then it got to be so much work , I just couldn't keep up with the photos. It seems are business
although always busy (yea) with redo's of mid-century furniture seems to go in cycles of
what comes in. at this time Eames lounge chairs seem to be coming to the shop to be redone at the rate of 3 a week (and that is a lot ) most of them Selig and ply craft ( more than likely since we are by far the least expensive in the USA, It seems that everyone want there lounge redone , since they cost so much new and a fraction to redo. The Herman Miller chair is still the most expensive and we do around 1 a month of those chairs . Next up we still do 100's of the eames armshells and side shells. We are one of a few shops in the USA that actually no how to recover that chair. Once again we try to be the least expensive but with shipping across country or even from Europe and Japan it can cost a little more.

Just wondering, LRF
Have you ever attempted to make the removeable pads for armshells?

removable pads
I have never tried to make a removable pad on the armshell. I don't think it would stay on the chair. I have made lots of full chair pads for the Bertoia wire chair I am sure it might be the same process with a draw string pulling it together .maybe I will try to knock one out to see how it looks, but the fiberglass might slip where the wire does not. It would be no problem just to
make a little pad to sit in the chair
but that chair requires new foam with spray on glue, three cut patterns, sewn together and a crimp cord. thanks for the idea i will let you know if it works .

Well you know they used to...
Well you know they used to make them that way. I have always thought it would be cool to do. Then you have the option of change.

eames chairs
They made those chairs in the early 60's only in the Herman Miller Factory in Calf. I have several here in the shop They also used them on the wire chairs, I think they look cool and our differnt, right away you know they came out of Calf. for some reason.
That Vinyl is so tough you can't pry it off with pliers.
I can see where it would be a cool idea to make them to be able to change with others but the originals are tough as nails and could not be removed with our a struggle.
