I finished weaving my second...
I finished weaving my second Hvidt chair today. It took something like 10-12 hours. I have done three paper cord dining chairs in a day, but I don't think I would ever get very fast at doing this style of rattan seat weaving.
I photographed the process this time, and will add a tutorial to my website as soon as I have time to write the text and edit the photos. Hopefully in a week or so.
So beautiful!
Thanks for updating!
I bet you'd get quicker at the rattan with just a little more practice. I cruised through the third chair I did recently---after taking five times as long to do the first, I think. The second was a little better and on the third I hit my stride.
I'm doing a different weave on another piece right now and it's a bit frustrating to find the rhythm. I'll probably get it about 2 strands from finishing...
Thanks Spanky. There do...
Thanks Spanky. There do seem to be quite a few different ways that rattan is done. My second Hvidt chair is a little bit more recent production than the first one, and it had a weaving method that kind of "braided" the rattan, as seen in this image (where much of the old rattan has already been cut away from the chair). This weaver had used no nails or brads at all to secure the ends of the rattan, as the tag ends were bound in by the next course of wraps. I opted to use the same weaving approach I had used on my first chair, so I did not spend a lot of time trying to figure out how this other method was done.
Oo, that is nice!
From what I can figure out just looking at it, it was done from the top down. I will have to save that photo for future reference.
On the one I'm doing now, I slip the end of the cane under the last front-to-back (or top-to-bottom) strand. I have to lift the existing strand up with a tool, in my case the blades of a small pair of chrome scissors. It's tricky and I keep meaning to dig up my old narrow-bladed letter opener, which would be ideal, I think. The chrome is slick and the cane slides under it very nicely.
I got the "how-to" webpage...
I got the "how-to" webpage and photos up for doing the Hvidt chair weaving. I have proofread it a few time, so hopefully there are not too many typos or nonsensical statements remaining.

I think it is going to be...
I think it is going to be pretty similar. The extra trim strips that your chair has woven into it are something that I have seen cited as helping prolong the life of the weaving, in addition to being decorative. Apparently the strips possibly keep the strands from moving/rubbing as much where the strands meet the frame. My Hvidt chair does not have them, but they do look nice. It looks like Spanky has done those kinds of trim strips. The "Caner's Handbook" makes it appear to be pretty easy to incorporate them into the weaving. If you take some photos of the removal of the weaving that show how it is all done, please post.
