quick idea, needs thinking...
quick idea, needs thinking upon for those without a vacuum press, put sand in bottom of roughly made crate, put down layer of plastic, place seat back on sand, lay down glue and veneer, put down another layer of plastic then a deflated large kids beach ball on top, clamp down lid with valve protruding, pump up ball, make tea, wait.
White glue would be fine, I never really trusted it in a vacuum...
DCM repair
Khus, I have read with great interest your postings regarding the repairs you made to your LCW's as I am about to embark on a repair to 6 DCM's which also had been drilled and bolted. What thickness of veneer did you use? Was it paper backed or wood on wood? Do you have any other tips or warnings of pitfalls I may encounter other than what you have already posted?
Thanks in advance
dcm / lcw repair
Swampgas,
Have not been on here for a brief.
Am at work, but will check the thickness and manufacturer of the product for you and write again. Biggest thing I found is to completely tape(blue painter's tape) all the way around the back as tight a posibble(individual pieces front to back-lots of tape!) for a really good edge adhesion. Then place in the vacuum bag for the overall pressure. Arrived at this through a few trials. Worked perfect. I will read my posts again to see if anything else occurs to me.
paper backed veneer
Included a link to the product I used. Purchased at Menards in Minnesota. I is paper backed. Oddly, the packaging does not designate the thickness. So am not sure.
I used the netting over the chair back to allow air out of the vacuum bag, but would not do that again. Left some minor marks in the new veneer, however, I was able to lightly sand them away.
Once you get the first of your 5 chairs done, the others will go much faster with confidence in the process.

veneer thickness
Seems it was the 0.020" thickness of the 3 listed on Cedan's website. That number seems most familiar. Here's a link to the same product but via Menard's.

Thanks Khus
Your postings of your experience with restoring the DCM has been of great help. I am undertaking the task now with a venturi vacuum system which I built from a kit. So far all I have accomplished is removing the old shock mounts and sanding the finish off in preparation of the reveneering. Once I am done I'll post pictures of the various steps and final outcome.
refinishing existing veneer
have any of you refinished an existing chair back/seat?
I have a drilled through back that i was going to patch w/ a dowel and try to match a small veneer patch and lightly sand and refinish the back and seat (i'd like to keep as much original as possible)
What would you recommend refinishing with. I want to keep a more matte finish so was thinking tung oil might be the way to go but not sure i want to keep oiling it ever 6 months...
