Personally,
I think it should be on its original site, sure there is 'competition' from other buildings, but barring the London Eye, they are all contemporary with the original Skylon.
The car park, where it was originally situated, still feels like the last unfinished part of the whole South Bank development, and Skylon would complete it beautifully.

I've
been thinking about this, and it all seems rather small-minded of them to say it will be overshadowed..
Why does it have to be the same size as the original?
..we are living in a different age, with modern technology, materials and construction methods.
I'd build it 3 or 4 times larger than the original..
and make sure it isn't overpowered..
let it be as potent a symbol today, as it was then

agreed
Dont think it...
agreed
Dont think it would work in another location kind of defeats the object for me
I would love to see it, I can imagine it illuminated at night, awesome!
What a shame they scrapped the original 🙁
Interesting bit of trivia from wikipedia:
In spite of its popularity with the public, the cost of dismantling and re-erecting the Skylon elsewhere (£30,000) was deemed too much for a government[1] struggling with Post-War austerity. Skylon was scrapped in 1952 on the orders of Winston Churchill, who saw it a symbol of the preceding Labour Government,[2] when the rest of the exhibition was dismantled; it was toppled into the Thames, cut into pieces and apparently turned into ashtrays

Although it might be an
unfortunate decision of Winston Churchill (not his only one) I do not see any reason to rebuild it, not even in a larger scale. The Skylon might have been significant for the festival of Britain and the reconstruction years, it obviously was not a few years later. So, why would it be relevant today...as a sign that we in 2008 are eager to restore whatever happened or was build in the middle of the last century? Let the London eye speak for our times and do not waist any money on lost objects...

Would you say the same for the Globe Theatre? (personally I think its a great addition)

I can see your point...
but, I would make a difference between re-building something strictly symbolic like the skylon and re-constructing William Shakespeare's theater (not great architecture by the way) The Globe is not only a a symbol, it is fully functional. But the question remains. I for one see more urgent use of the talents that will be needed.

The Globe
The Globe leaves me cold..it is so Disneyesque
The site is questionable...as is the architecture..
don't get me wrong.. medieval London fascinates me as much as 20th Century London, but I somehow feel resurrecting a short-lived recent 'monument' is more worthy than a pastiche of a shakesperian theatre..of which there were many in London... Curtain Road probably being the best example ..and long forgotten..
