I have this amazing centerpiece called "SQUARE" by Sylvio Coppolla for Alessi.

It was produced sometime in the early 1980's and apparently Coppolla had a major falling-out with Alessi and it went out of production within a year or two.

has anyone ever seen it?

It's cool looking!
My guess as to it's primary usage would be as a fruit bowl. Yes, No, Maybe?

I have to agree with James
This "fruit" bowl was all over the place. For a period of time it was as frequently includes in any kichen shot as P.Starck's lemon sqeezer.
So...to call it rare is slightly overstated but I agree with our feathered Texan that it is one of the better Alessi pieces.

This bowl
I went into the Alessi store in NYC's Soho district and they've never seen one.
Strange, since Coppola had some kind of scrape with Allesi, they've basically removed from their past history.
It is shown in an Alessi book, but no info on it.

It is a common...
characteristic for most commercial enterprises that they have little information about products that they are not selling...any more.
I have seen many times that the history of a company is often left to a well willing employee or former employee that has some interest in the matter...unless you become a legend and of some interest for historians. I would not read more into it than that.
