Jens Risom dies at 100 years of age. The Dane who transplanted himself in the US, to share the brilliance of Scandinavian design, passed yesterday. While maybe not the most celebrated designer in the US, he certainly made his mark on design world of the middle 20th century.
He was classmates with Hans and Børge at Kunsthåndværkerskolen, while studying under Ole Wanscher and Kaare Klint. He Helped Hans Knoll start what would become a juggernaut in design, Knoll Furniture, which continues to define the world of design still to this day. He started his own design company, JRD, which provided US homes and offices wonderful furniture for nearly 4 decades.
No doubt he will be missed by those of us who celebrate the designs of the middle of the last century.

Jens Risom's first designs for Knoll, the webbed chairs from the early 1940s for me are his best work ever. Simple and an elegant design solution for a chair design(s) during the time when there was so much restrictions in materials available for furniture manufacturing. Re-purposing rejected/discarded parachute straps...way ahead of its time. You will be missed Mr. Risom.
