It has been my understanding that Breuer's Wassily chair or B3 was produced, in this order, by Standard-Mobel, Thonet, Gavina, and finally Knoll. These were the authentic or licensed makers. Recently I've seen photos of vintage high quality Wassily chairs with a Stendig labels that said "Original design Stendig Made in Finland" Stendig was only an importer I think, so were these made by Gavina in Finland and not Italy or were they unlicensed ones made in Finland and imported by Stendig or were they licensed to Stendig and made in Finland? I have not seen this answered in the archives.
Wassily Chair
This business of the "official" version is a lot of nonsence.Standard Mobil became absorbed by Thonet and then Thonet passed through different ownerships that didn't bother about agreements with the designer because the Wassily chair was in the public domain. Dino Gavino was one f the few persons who signed a licence agreement with Marcel Breuer to produce the Wassily, the cesca chair and a wooden chaise longue which was being manufactured in England. This agreement was a friendly contract that could not be imposed on third parties because the models were all public property. Knoll bought Gavina's company and took over all of the models which continued to be produced in Italy. They didn't bother to sign new contracts. Stendig was selling the Wasily chair and the hand woven cesca chairs from Metal Censi which was a factory run by an old Gavina employee and supplier . It was basically the same model from the same source that was sold by Knoll. Thonet America bought a Wassily from Matrix in Italy which they sold as an original, while the same chair was being sold by other companies as a copy.
